Anyone interested generally in business case studies will enjoy the book at the author built one of the most successful startups in Hollywood in the modern era. If you are interested in the film business specifically, the book is probably a must read.You also get some insight on how he handled negotiations, employees, and clients. There are Hollywood anecdotes about stars and famous directors including a priceless paragraph about how he got his martial arts instructor, Steven Seagal, a movie deal.The "memoir" part is also interesting. Ovitz doesn't get too specific but you get a feel for the background he came from and what drove him. He admits to some mistakes he made and discusses how he manipulated people and was stabbed in the back as well. As usual with memoirs, there is some self-promotion and score settling.I'm surprised there aren't more reviews of Who is Michael Ovitz. Maybe Ovitz's Hollywood enemies have helped bury the book, which is one of the better reads of the year.
Interesting book on the inside machinations of Hollywood. The author comes off mostly as a douche, which tells you he was probably even worse back in the day. Hard to imagine he would think this does anything except paint himself in a bad light. The stereotypical abrasive, greedy, power crazed Jewish entertainment agent. Yes, he made a ton of money and people feared him in his prime, but you just know hardly anyone in Hollywood misses him one bit. What a sad legacy to a career.
Outstanding. The title is very appropriate. I found myself asking the same question "who is Michael Ovitz??" when i saw him do an interview on CNBC. I became curious so i bought the book. NOW, I normally don't like reading long winded books let alone a 400 page one but If you're going to write one that long you better make sure it's damn good. This book is "Damn good". I couldn't stop reading. For 2 weeks straight I woke up early every morning just so i could get to the next chapter. I read it at work. I read it after work. If i didn't know better i'd say this book was written like a screenplay (*wink*).
A wonderfully told origin story. Ovitz is the rare successful man who can look back with honesty, recounting both his achievements and failures. It makes him a more sympathetic figure; you end up cheering for him even though you know how the story ends. It shares many parallels — and is on par with — Thomas Watson’s brilliant ‘Father, Son & Co.: My Life at IBM and Beyond.’
Recommended especially for those who are interested in the movie business and/or the mechanics of orchestrating very large corporate transactions.

He is someone who wants to get down to business and do whatever it takes. The stories of this book are very useful and you will gain insight of the highest levels of success. He challenged the status quo and wanted to do right for the client. Complete Cleaner in the Hollywood scope and now working in Silicon Valley that advised a Venture Capital firm right away to make them distinctive among all firms. Very worth your time and valuable information. I'm biased as I was born in Los Angeles and know the city very well so it was very relative to my upbringing and life.

Just received the book, so I cannot write a review on the substance of autobiography. But Amazon, something is wrong with the storage of this book pre-shipping. I opened the package and almost passed out. The book and the inside of the packaging smells very strongly of puke. There is white dust residue on it as well. And the book only came out the past year, so the pages should not be near as yellowed as they are. I would like to read the book, but I highly doubt I will because I can't stand the smell when opening it to read it. Most books smell like paper; some old books may take on a faint smell, but no where near as strong as this book, which is like it has been soaked in cat pee and puke and then dried out again.
