From Publishers Weekly

Blood, lust and loyalty are at the heart of this latest pulp offering from Noire. At 18, Lamont Mason, aka Hood, rises up in the hierarchy of the Brownsville, Brooklyn, drug trade, despite a tough childhood where he and his younger brother, Moo, are cast off (at 11 and four, respectively) by their crack-addicted mother. Hood forges a new family with the corrupt barber Fat Daddy and his gorgeous, full-of-future-plans daughter, Egypt, as well as with a fellow dealer, Dreko, whom Hood sees as a brother, despite Dreko's own mother thinking he's a twisted demon. When allegiances start to falter, big deals go down and the lure of the drugs he sells begin taking over the lives of those close to him, Hood, while constantly inventing rhymes that keep him sane, has to decide who he can afford to love if he wants to survive. Behind Noire's hyperrealistic graphic violence and raunchy sex are interwoven stories, a strong plot and carefully drawn characters with classic motivations. Noire is Dickens for the age of dojah, donuts and dawgs. (Aug.) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

After the death of his father Lamont AKA Hood is left at the tender age of 13 to provide and care for not only himself but for his 4 year old brother Moo. His Mother was addicted to that glass dick and there was nothing stopping her from getting it, including her own children. Hood & his little brother Moo soon find themselves sleeping in crack houses, alleys & abandoned cars, eating from trash cans and any handout they could get their hands on.Fat Daddy, a local barber shop owner and well known respected hustler soon notices the two homeless boys and offers them a place to rest their heads. Fat Daddy's roof comes with a price, cleaning the shop & staying in school were two rules that he demanded. Soon Hood shows the local trap boys that his heart is way bigger then his dick, and with his street mentality he lands himself the #1 spot in one of the most lucrative drug empires ran by Xan, a drug lord running Brownsville, Brooklyn. Life couldn't get any better after Hood was given his own team of trap boys. He had his Ace Dreko who was like a brother, and together ain't nothing could stop them. The story explodes from there as we learn about the evil darkness that is embedded in Dreko's veins. Hood soon falls in love with Egypt who is Fat Daddy's pride and joy. Different then most girls from the hood, Egypt has dreams of going to school and becoming a Doctor. Blood, lust and loyalty are all quickly tested and Hood is determined to put the pieces of the puzzle together because shit is just not adding up. Some of the most unimaginable things take place in this novel. From molestation, to same sex escapades, to the reality of HIV and AIDS you will not want to put this book down. If you can handle the gritty truth of the streets, then sit back and enjoy the ride.

I found hood to be refreshing, a rags to riches story, typical but it’s also a story about determination and never giving up. I saw that to be very refreshing. I’ve been looking for a book to keep my interest for awhile and this was it; thank you Norie, for another good read, you never disappoint!

This book was excellent! It had me on an emotional high the entire time. So many ups and downs, but one thing was for sure ..... Hood survived and through his losses, he was victorious.

I read this book and was totally blown away. You struggle with Lamont AKA Hood throughout the entire novel. Not only did he have it rough growing up, the problems continue to follow him thru his adult life. The most chilling character of this novel, however, was Dreko. I actually had nightmares about this character. He was so cold, insane, and evil. My heart went out to Egypt and Zena. Especially Zena. She got involved with the wrong guy and her life changed for the complete worst. I loved this book because it accurately tells how your life can literally change within a short amount of time. This book was awesome. Noire at best for sure!!!

"Hood" was a great book! I was hooked from page one. Noire did her thing, I always know when I get a Noire book it's gonna be a sure nuf page turner!Lamont aka Hood never had an easy life, he started out on his own at age 11 trying to take care if his baby brother Moo on the cold streets of Brooklyn. Their mom Marjay is a crackhead who leaves them to fend for themselves. Hood grows up and gets involves in the street life 100%. Hood's life is never easy and the people he loves most always seem to hurt him or leave him. This story had me hooked and the parts about Moo had me in tears literally, I could feel the pain and hurt. I also felt bad for Zena, and her baby Dreka. This is a must read Noire does not dissapoint!!

Awesome read that Drakeo was as slimy as can be. So glad Egypt got herself together. That crack is a awful thing 😔

Borrowed this book in 2009!!! Got to the last 5 chapters and someone took it upon them self to "borrow" the already borrowed copy. Never stopped thinking about the book. Anyway I searched all over for another copy. Until three days ago when I got my kindle, I had come up empty. It's the FIRST purchase I made lol. Worth the chase & worth the $. Will read it over & over.

A trilling story of hard life and the come up on these harsh Brooklyn streets. Sex, love , drugs, life.

Maybe I'm not in the right stage of my life to read a book like this, maybe I'm not at the right age, maybe I just won't ever like it. But I'm not going to lie I'm pretty devastated that I didn't like this book. Markus Zusak is my favorite author, the book theif was my favorite book and maybe I had my hopes set way way too high when I started this book. From the second I started it I knew I wasn't going to love it, I just couldn't get into the story. I didn't have any relationship with the characters which is not like me. I didn't like the writing style which really surprised me. I don't know what happened but I just didn't like it. I don't regret buying it though, it's just part of my journey as a reader. I hope the rest of you love this book. I really do. Maybe I'll try again one day when I'm in a different place in my life.

I couldn't wait to read Bridge of Clay after reading The Book Thief. As I turned the page in Bridge of Clay I thought hummm I must have missed something. The storytellers random thoughts or just added phrases or words seemed misplaced but I kept on reading. The book demands attention! It's a family saga full of love, anger, heartbreak, failure and accomplishment. Clay is the bridge. I loved it and finished with tears in my eyes.

I absolutely loved Zusak’s previous books I am the Messenger and The Book Thief and couldn’t wait to read this one. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in Bridge of Clay. Though there were several very powerful scenes in the book, the writing style often made it difficult for me to follow the story and it never really flowed comfortably for me. Perhaps it’s just my limited intellect but when I turned the last page I felt like I had probably missed some critical plot elements in the book.

The Book Thief is in my top 5 favorite books of all time. Markus Zusak has an amazing way of bringing his characters to life in such a way that they stay with me, long after the book is over. Bridge of Clay took years and years for Markus to write, which is quite an inspirational story in and of itself. While reading Bridge, I appreciated each detail of his writing because I knew how intentional it was for him. These five Dunbar brothers and their story is one that will stay with me. The writing of their tale is woven together so masterfully, poetically, gingerly. The story does not begin at the beginning--it begins in the present, which is the end; and then it goes back in time to the beginning. It's difficult to figure the timing out at first, but keep reading. The words drew me in and once I was in, I didn't want the story to end. I also tried to predict how Markus would tie all the pieces together at the end, as he did so masterfully in Book Thief. Bridge of Clay did not disappoint. The book ends back at the beginning. The circular way of writing adds layer upon layer to the characters and their dynamic relationship. The writing shows the complexity of these five Dunbar boys, but you will love them! I already want to read it again.

I bought this book because of rave reviews and because "The Book Thief" was absolutely great. But after 70 pages when I couldn't figure out what the story line was about, I quit. It is one of the most confusing novels I have ever attempted to read.

Five Dunbar boys, the eldest was Matthew (who narrated the story), the fourth was Clay, who seemed to be the most sensitive and socially aware. The youngest was Tommy with Henry and Rory somewhere in between. They lived at 18 Archer Street in the suburbs of Sydney, where Matthew took over the job of caring for his brothers after their mother died and six months later their father left without a word. Their struggles were many, their ways of grieving all different.Bridge of Clay tells of tragedy and loss; of heartache and hope; and insecurities, not just in the five boys but in their father as well. Clay would be the one to build a bridge – but was it a bricks and mortar bridge, or a metaphorical bridge? As we learn of life before the five Dunbar boys were born; of Michael’s early life, and Penny’s as well, we get to know their individual likes and dislikes; their hopes for the future. It was Penny who said she’d like five children, but Michael who said, let them not all be boys!I struggled initially with Bridge of Clay – the writing confused me, and I couldn’t get into the flow of the story. I put it aside for a few days, then picked it up again today. Straight away I was into the lives of the Dunbar boys, and couldn’t put it down, and although it jumps around, it’s easy to catch the links. The publisher’s words best sum it up – “Here is a story told inside out and back to front.” Aussie author Markus Zusak has had Bridge of Clay coming for our reading pleasure for some years now – I’m glad it’s finally here. Recommended. (make sure you have tissues at the ready!)

I've been waiting a loooong time for a new Markus Zusak book, and was so excited to read 'Bridge of Clay'... now I'm not going to lie, it started off a bit slow, and the writing style threw me off at first. But after the first few chapters, you pick up how it's supposed to flow. By the 4th chapter - I couldn't put it down... and by the end I was crying and in love. It's absolutely worth the time to get to know the 'boys'... and 'Bridge of Clay' unfolds into an an amazingly emotional and fulfilling read. Highly recommend!

I really wanted to like this book as I loved Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief but I’m sorry to say it was impossible. Bridge of Clay was impossible for me to finish. I forced myself to stay with it but by the halfway mark I began to skip pages in hope of finding some sense to the story. I really couldn’t follow the way this story is told. To me it was disjointed and confusing. I felt the author tried too hard. The locations were hard to understand and the characters just never come to life. The timeline is all over the place. There was never a point at which I began to care about these people. Too often it was if the author lost his way and his line of thought resulting in a bunch of half explored events. When I first looked through this book my first thought was to return it. I went as far as requesting a return shipping label. I should have gone with my first impression. I’m sorry to say I was unable to finish the book. I could not recommend it.

If you're looking for a book for a child who is beginning to read chapter books, this is a good option. Even as an adult I enjoyed this book. The story moves along swiftly with humor. The Kindle edition retains the black and white illustrations.

definately not my favorite book ever. I could not bring myself to finish it. I just wasn't good. It might have been better for younger kids, but I don't know.

A fun take on the myth of Thor's "wedding" - a great read for adult and child alike.

A hilarious retelling of an already-hilarious story! Everyone's favorite Norse gods get themselves into ridiculous trouble!

So very very amusing.... growing up with Decorah (Iowa) on the horizon, making fun of the Norse is a way of life... this was cute!

Good book for school age kids. Good for teaching moral of the story.

My son was learning Norse mythology at school and this was a funny look at Thor! He thoroughly enjoyed it.

Based on the humorous Norse tale about the theft of Thor’s hammer, Bruce Coville fleshes the story out with other pieces of Norse mythology to give readers this amusing story of cross-dressing gods, talking goats, and dopey giants.Told by Thor’s goat boy Thialfi, Thor’s Wedding Daybegins with Thor discovering his mighty hammer, Mjolnir, missing. His trickster brother Loki discovers that their enemies, the giants, have somehow gotten hold of the hammer and refuse to give it back unless their sister, Freya, marries Thrym, king of the giants and Thor’s enemy. Freya refuses, and Loki concocts a scheme to dress Thor up as Freya and get his hammer back. Loki agrees to accompany Thor as a bridesmaid and Thialfi must dress up to be Thor’s goat girl. While in the company of the giants, Thialfi discovers that their plan goes far deeper than just handing Mjolnir back to “Freya” after the wedding, and he finds himself in the position of saving Asgard.Bruce Coville can tell a funny story, and Thor’s Wedding Day is no exception. He stays true to the tale that inspired him and to make it accessible to new, younger audiences. It’s downright silly in some parts with a touch of adventure and intrigue – a good combination to keep more reluctant readers interested.

Dover scores have been invaluable to me as an adult. I believe the cheap, large versions of complete operas and symphonies, chamber music and solo instrumentals, began to show up around 1981. I say this only because I bought every one that came along, with rare exception, and loved the fact that at last I had something akin to what the conductor would look at, not a partitur that was 5 X 8. I would say that by 1985 I owned between 80 and 100 Dovers. All were large and take up a lot of shelf space. But they are clearly legible without glasses for me.The "small size" has now been revisited upon us. It seems that with the Mahler Symphonies all have been reissued in a "single size" packaging. As far as I'm concerned, it's nice to have a cheap well made score, but the smaller size now makes the several I've bought almost impossible to read. The ninth requires high powered reading glasses as does the third. These are the two "new" ones that I have. The rest of the Mahler's are from the old, large Dover plates. While they may not be perfectly accurate in terms of up to the minute performance practices, their visual convenience trumps the small print of the newer more accurate (I hope!) editions. Worth having if you can't get anything larger, but better to go to a used book store and buy the larger scores if they're still available. If you can't do that, at least don't strain your eyes!

Really great for its pocket size

A little bit bigger than I expected it to be, but It's still readable.

Now, if I just knew how to read music...this is good, regardless. Detailed, complete for study.

The score came in a timely manner and was what I expected it to be.

I own all the Mahler Symphonies with the exception of this one ... it was time to make the purchase as we performed the work that season.

Colorado 14er Disasters, by Mark Scott-Nash

Review

Disasters and accidents in the mountains are always a draw.... It’s full of lessons learned from poor decision-making or plain bad luck. The first time I read it, I thought, "all these people are so stupid." The second time, I realized that many of these accidents could easily happen to any of us. From beginners to experts, anyone can make a mistake or be in the wrong place when rocks fall. (Katie Sauter, Library Director American Alpine Club Library)In his riveting book, Scott-Nash chronicles several Colorado alpine calamities--e.g., climbers stranded on the Diamond, a critically injured glissader, a woman missing on Holy Cross--and the often-poor decision-making that contributed. Neither sensationalistic nor coldly analytical, the stories unfold with humanity, suspense, and valuable insight. (Kristen Bjornsen, Review of 1st Edition Climbing Magazine)

I would have been well served to read this book before finishing all of the 14ers, but I could not muster up the courage to do so. The book is about some of the disasters on the mountains. The stories ranch from talking about some of the famous deaths in the mountains, like the Talus Monkey, to some of the tourists on Longs Peak. The book is deeper than a chronicling of disasters, rather it is about how to avoid some of the costly mistakes that people make. Sometimes in the mountains, freak accidents happen, and other times, it is through errors of the hikers. What is interesting is that often mistakes compound that lead to a death. This is probably I book you would not enjoy unless you enjoy the great outdoors. Also, you will enjoy the book much more if you are engaged in some type of dangerous mountain activity. Throughout the years, I have been fortunately to not have a serious incident, but I have witnessed some highly close calls. Knowing your limits, and knowing the rules of engagement are helpful in staying alive. Another lesson is to never become overconfident. The day you believe you have it all figured out, will probably be the start of the countdown to your end. This was a good read, though sad, but one that I could relate to, and one that I put off reading for many years, but it was less anxiety producing knowing that all of the dangerous mountains have been climbed.

This is a must read not only for people who climb or want to climb 14ers, but for people who hike and spend time on Colorado mountains. My wife and I were surprised at how easily the victims in this book succumbed to the elements. These are eye-opening stories and force readers to reconsider pushing forward when weather has worsened or when the trail is too icy, snowy, muddy, etc. A surprising number these stories turn tragic due to one partner convincing the other partner to push on despite fear or concern over conditions. Always follow your instinct and not your partner's tunnel vision for reaching the top.

I read this in a day, mostly due to the excellent writing though it is less than 200 pages. Rather than try to cover every 14er disaster, the author picks a sampling based on cause, mostly recent but some older accidents as well which he links to more recent events. The author pulls no punches when faulting some of the participants bit it isnt done in a "blame the victim" manner. Rather its simply an explanation of why misfortune fell to some. I appreciate his lack of judgementalness while still providing awareness to the reader how quickly mother nature can turn on us, and serving as a wakeup that much of the west is still very much remote and wild. And rescue may be days away, not just a few hours, and sometimes one can still disappear never to be found (the final tale).

I pretty much concur with the other reviewers: Scott-Nash writes well, although most of these true stories of tragedy mostly tell themselves. For anyone who has hiked and climbed in the mountains, especially in Colorado, these are grim cautionary tales. If we cannot save these victims, at least maybe we can avoid becoming one of them. Many times while hiking with my companions, we have had discussions about how to avoid making bad decisions, and what we would do if such a disaster befell us (it's easy to think we'd all be calm and heroic, but panic and pain can bring the strongest man to a bad conclusion). We have often said, "You know, just one careless slip on this cliff or trail, and this outing would change from carefree to nightmare!" We try to always carry emergency and survival gear, because nobody goes out planning to get lost or injured, do they? But when climbing 14ers, it often goes beyond being careless. It involves being poorly informed, or poorly prepared, or a poor judge of your own abilities, or worse, a poor judge of your companion's abilities or character (hence the wife who let her husband lead her deeper and deeper into the worst possible route up Holy Cross...).Even if you have never climbed a 14er, this book will hold your attention.

There is an old saying: To fail to prepare is to prepare to fail. This book is a valuable guide to help hikers prepare for contingencies. If nothing else it impresses upon one's mind that in the event of an emergency in the mountains, immediate help or rescue is not usually an option. The emphasis is, of course, on Colorado 14ers, but the principles expressed apply to all mountain activities. I enjoyed it and recommend it as fundamental reading for all of those venturing into the mountains regardless of your level of experience.

Not only does this book compel the reader to consume it quickly, it offers a great perspective on several common issues that every hiker climber faces, particularly those who casually start out on standard 14er routes that are class 3 or less.Preparation, training, and good decision making are essential to surviving in the mountains. Anyone who proposes to undertake these climbs/hikes must take a measure of responsibility to themselves, and particularly others. The most incredible point of this book is how people who should know better- those who have climbed dozens of 14ers- can make decisions for others that are tantamount to negligent homicide.I'll never forget the circumstances of the disastrous climb of Holy Cross where an experienced, acclimated hiker abandons a novice climber suffering from AMS, dehydration, and other ills so that he can make the summit- telling her to traverse a mile alone over off-trail, notoriously tricky terrain so they can meet up on the other side. The lesson is for experienced hikers trying to lead novices into the mountains and ANYONE who would undertake a climb or hike above 10K feet, or on technical or difficult terrain. Know what you're doing. Trust no one lightly, and make human survival and safety the key goal.

There are lots of online, free sources of travel information, but Lonely Planet still stands out as ones one stop resource that will not only provide you with basic need to know information upon a "crash landing", but also has comprehensive historical and regional information (climate, when to go, events, etc.). Finally, their lively writing style and focus on the quirky and interesting makes one truly want to explore where they are visiting, not just hit the tourist must-sees.I used the digital version of this guide book recently, and I'm from the area. Not only did I re-visit old haunts long forgotten, but I learned new things about my own stomping ground.Highly recommended.

This book was informative, and helpful on a recent road trip through the Southwest. The index needs improvement. Several times there was a restaurant (e.g. the Owl Bar and Cafe) or an entire town that I looked for in the index, but it wasn't listed. Later I would find that there was information about the place in the book, but I didn't find it until too late, because it wasn't in the index.

Comprehensive guide, planned a two week trip from it. Got us unlost when we took a wrong turn in the desert, no joke. My favorite LP book.

Using as a guide to find photographic opportunities in my part of the country. This is perfect for my use.

Very helpful in planning our trip - hope it proves as helpful while on the trip! My husband was hoping for more info on Hoover Dam and more maps and times of travel from place to place.

Very thorough book! Great itineraries and beautiful pictures. Makes planning our trip so easy! Got hooked on Lonely planet after using their Morocco book.

Well done as are all the Lonely Planet guide books. Good information about regions, customs, pricing and lodging.

Product as described - typical Lonely planet guide!

I used this book to make the best Thanksgiving dinner since my mom died over 25 years ago. The dressing brought back memories of my mom and was absolutely delicious. While my Mac and Cheese is pretty good, the recipe in this book took it to another level. As an appetizer, I made the fried wings and sauce, again very easy to follow recipes that taste wonderful. My next attempt will be the potato salad and the greens for Christmas...I can't wait.

I was so excited and so happy for her these recipes remind me of my grandmother and my mother there's only a few difference in some her recipes and some new ones I never heard of my grandson got excited about the Kool Aid pie so we made that and we enjoyed it it was delicious congratulations miss Robbie may God bless you.

Love, love, LOVE this cook book! The yummy recipes remind me of the food my mother, grandmother and neighbor ladies made when I was growing up. The instructions are user-friendly and the vibrant photos just jump off the page. Miss Robbie's back-stories nestled among many of the recipes give you the feel of being taught a cooking lesson from a sassy auntie. My 87-year-old mom (a stroke patient) is a big fan of the TV show, "Welcome to Sweetie Pies" I made the mistake of showing the book to Mom when I served her breakfast. She loves it so much she couldn't put it down to eat!

Finally it is here. Thanks Miss Robbie. I have been waiting for this cookbook. The recipes remind me of my dear Mom's recipes. Some are exactly the same. Easy to follow directions with basic ingredients. Reminds me of home and all the great memories. Soul food at its best. Can't wait to start cooking!

So far I tried the greens, potato salad, hot honey chicken wings, & succotash. Everything is very good and pretty simple to make. I am not a very good cook and I found that a couple of the recipes do not complete the instructions. For example, the chicken wings calls for lemon juice and soy sauce in the instructions, but do not list those two ingredients in the Ingredients list, therefore I had to guess at how much to use and I probably got it wrong. Another example: the succotash recipe indicates to cook the bacon and remove from the pan, but then the instructions stop. However, by looking at the picture I figured out what to do with the bacon. I wish all the recipes could have had a pic, but I know that was not possible. The pics that are in the book are outstanding. I had already made the mac & cheese several times by getting the recipe online. Making Sweetie Pie’s mac & cheese is the only way I can make a decent mac & cheese. I can’t wait to try more of the recipes.

I love this book! I really love the idea of making your own spices to add to your dishes and the alternative broths.

I usually purchase a cookbook because I am interested in most of the recipes. But with this cookbook, every single recipe will be on my dinner table! I am a wife and mother of three boys. I cannot wait to prepare the dishes for them.

This book has every recipe I could've ever imagined. I even love the sample menus and how she teaches you how to make sauces, seasoning mixes, etc from scratch. No other cookbook I've come across included nearly half of what's in this book. I now have my cooking Bible! Thank You Ms Robbie and especially Tim for pushing her to share her receipes with us.

You have to read through a lot of blah, blah, blah..."we walked down the hall...it smelled like cement" to get to the point of each chapter. I get the premise that you don't want to bore people with the details of taxes and accounting. BUT here's the rub, you just bought a book to learn about taxes and accounting. So maybe I want some of those details. He gives you just enough to get you interested so want to go to a CPA (him maybe) and pay for the details. This is the second book I've read from a professional recently that the whole book was one big sales pitch for their business. Genius! And they get us to PAY for the sales pitch. In all seriousness, you will get some interesting tidbits of strategies. And depending on where you are, just starting or experienced business owner, will depend on how much you get. I didn't learn anything new until the last few strategies of pay your family, rental properties and self directed 401k's. You could get more out of it. But he doesn't explain anything in detail to the point where you could do anything with just this book. I can't really recommend it.

A few nuggets of great ideas about the necessity of owning rental property, but to get to these points you have to plod through hundreds of pages of useless anecdotes about high-five-ing his brother in law and smiling at his wife. Who cares. Just get to the bottom line.

I have owned my business for almost a decade and have gone through my fair share of bookkeepers and CPAs. None of them have shared this kind of information with me. I read this book and an afternoon and I have far more confidence about my financial future than I have ever had. I highly recommend this book for anybody who is a small business owner or who is thinking about becoming a small business owner. I am sick to my stomach to think that I did not have this information for many many years, but I am excited about the future now that I have it.

Provided nothing profound. Overall a pretty lightweight resource and probably not much value to anyone already running their own business. On a positive note, however, the diagrams comparing S Corp, C Corp, and LLC were useful.

Very easy book to read. Shouldn’t take more than a day. I’ve learned so much! It’s more than real estate, don’t be fooled by other comments. If you are looking to get an idea of how badly you need to get your house in order, this book will do just that. I recommend this book to every small business and potential new business owners just so they know what really goes behind a successful business when it comes to taxes.

Another great book to read for finding out what may not be in a CPA's best interest to tell you, or who lacks knowledge to share with you. There are bookkeepers, accountants, CPA's, and then there are CPAs that have actually thought about the law they try to work within. This is info from a lawyer/CPA who is able to see this from both points of view.

The book could be made a lot more succinct. It does have some good ideas, such as HSA, business deductions for children working in the family business, real estate deductions, and self directed IRA's. But I feel the book is not being completely honest in many ways. For example, the thing about real estate deductions - even losses - when this is really not that easy to get. If you want to be a "real estate" professional for irs tax purposes, you first have to satisfy stringent (and some say impossible to satisfy) rules ... and even when you think you do, you will inevitably raise audit red flags if you do take non-trivial amounts of deductions.About real estate in general, you also don't get to write off that much - depreciating value of improvement - not land - over 27.5 (or 49 for commercial) properties. What you do deduct, you also also do have to pay capital gains later. Yes capital gains is delayed, and yes capital gains is supposed to be taxed lower, but don't forget you have to pay property tax, maintenance, etc. over the years. I am not saying real estate doesn't offer a tax benefit, much have been written about it. And whether it is good depends on many factors, but the tax benefit should be considered tangential, not primary. What drives you to real estate investment should be the business of real estate investing, not tax. Also about self directed iras, one needs to be very careful about the many "prohibited transactions." The book barely touch on that. If one isn't careful, one might even think that one can use self directed iras to fund one's small business ideas when it's strictly prohibited!About HSAs. Yes, it's a good idea. But remember you have to keep careful receipts of ALL medical expenses. Also - when I was shopping last year, HSA premiums seemed pretty high, too. Again, for some this can work ... for others (say a family of four, including 2 young children), it depends...

There's not really any good tax strategies in this book. Don't waste your time reading it.

It was more book than the comicbook I was looking for..

Really informing book on villianesses

Like the super heroine book, I got this for my sister. I really liked reading the two of them.

I read lots of comics in the “golden age” but most were either superhero ones or funny ones. So the “Vixens, etc.” that Mike Madrid covers in this 256-page paperback were new to me.The book is divided into five sections. Each begins with a 9 to 10 page essay and those are followed by 8-9 page reproductions of comics featuring these “femmes”. All the comics are in black and white. I’m sure that the comics were originally in color and publishers like Fantagraphics are known for their color reproductions. At least a few should have been reproduced in color (like those on the front and back cover of this book.). Hence my rating of four. The writing – as in Madrid’s previous book- is first rate and that rates a five.I just want buyers to know that there is no color inside as that was not mentioned in other reviews posted here.I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.Steve Ramm“Anything Phonographic”

Astounding look at female villains in Golden Age comic book history. Absolutely absorbing read! I've become increasingly interested in comic book history and am a newbie to work from this early period; so 98% of the comics discussed were new to me but my interest in them has been spiked a full 100%! Each chapter focuses on a certain type of villainess and starts with a lengthy commentary by the author/compiler which is then followed by several b/w issues of comics featuring several of the villainesses that have been discussed. All comics reproduced here are in the public domain, from the Golden Age, mostly from the 1930s & 1940s and all from before the Comics Code Authority of 1954. Absolutely fascinating commentary which had me intrigued and will have me reading further about the history of this time period of the comics industry. Th comics themselves, when read within the context of the commentary, were a pure joy to read. Mike Madrid manages to place them within their era, societal views and explains why the comics he's chosen are excellent examples of stories which gave women positive, empowering roles for the time in which they written. How they are typical of the time period, but also how these ones in particular were affirmative and ground-breaking. Chapter themes include: inherent evilness in women, the role of beauty (or lack of it) on women, positive portrayals of women of colour (black, asian, india, etc)and true-crime real-life female criminals.I haven't read much from this time period before and found it very "out there". I thoroughly enjoyed the comics gathered here but do not think I would enjoy them as much without some type of commentary or annotation included as is presented here. I always thought that the Comics Code Authority was a joke and an overzealous, prudish product of the fifties but these comics here actually shocked me with the startling violence they contained. I mean it's nothing like today's blood and gore, but much more cold-blooded and surprised me with how it just came out of nowhere. There are scenes such as criminals blatantly turning around, shooting and killing police officers, a scene of a woman being hanged in the background, a little battle going on and then yikes someone is speared right through the body and another through the hand, another guy gets the ant treatment from natives: buried to the head in the ground, covered in honey and the ants go wild; later on someone trips over his skull. Maybe this doesn't sound so bad but taken in context, with the campy action, "clean" dialogue riddled with 30s/40s slang, it does come as shock when the coldblooded violence is so casual. If you read my reviews regularly you'll know one of my favourite topics is true-crime and serial killers so I was fascinated with the last section which contained comics from the comic book "Crimes by Women" from the 1940s. These were pure exploitation comics but soooo fun to read. I did find myself looking up these lady criminals though and out of the 5 included could only find information about two of them (but they were pretty gruesome serial killers!). The stories weren't exactly true to life though so whether these other "crimes" were real or not I don't know but I may just look up this comic and read more from it and others like it.This author has previously written a companion book on heroines which I would just adore to read as well!

Women have not often been portrayed in comics in the most positive light, if even at all. It is only in recent years that we have seen the emergence of strong female characters who were not spilling out of every stitch of skintight leotard they put on. Many times, they are shows as assistants, secretaries, or the damsels that need our hero's saving. Not so, in Vixens, Vamps, and Vipers!Looking at comics published before the implementation of the Comics Code in 1954, Mike Mardid's Vixens, Vamps, & Vipers shows us that while these Golden Age comics in no way promoted sexual equality, they did give us many strong characters, especially the baddies! These women were cunning, ruthless, smart, seductive, independent, diverse, and very outspoken. Everything we think women of the 1940s were not! Mike Madrid's brilliant and thoroughly researched commentary makes these characters come alive in the context of their times, but also how they relate to and helped influence today's female villains and heroines. In addition, stories referenced for each character are reproduced in full, giving the reader a wonderful insight into early comics, the 1940s, and brilliant stories they may have never seen otherwise.Highly recommended for anyone interested in comics history, women's studies, or mid 20th century history and culture.
