Trees of North America: A Guide to Field Identification, Revised and Updated (Golden Field Guide from St. Martin's Press) [Kindle Edition] is a nice guide to help you identify the trees in your area. It is a complete a guide as needed and contains detailed drawings of each property identifier of the tree for identification, areas of the country where each tree can be found and bark identifiers for trees. The Digital format of Trees of North America: A Guide to Field Identification, as a Kindle Edition can be taken on you Digital Reading Device into the field or used at home on your PC with the Amazon Kindle PC Reader app. I love my trees.

Perfect pocket size tree identification book. It is full of very colorful and helpful photos. I don't know much about trees myself and enjoyed reading this book and found the information easy to digest. Even though it is a Golden Book, it isn't exactly the kiddie books that company brings to mind. This is a resource for adults and young adults and could be read to children and the pictures may interest some younger children. My daughter is 4 and enjoys the pictures and just being told what everything is. I bought this for my husband to keep with him when he goes out into the woods. He enjoys some part time logging and has begun teaching himself tree identification. I think this will be an easy way for him to get started!

MAN, talk about detailed explanations. The way this book is layed out, there is no way you will fail to identify a tree. Even has "shaded areas of growth" on the parts of the continent it is predominate in. Just about the most valuable book in my pack!

For what it is - a small book on trees in North American, it's ok. Shows leaf patterns and brief descriptions - can't really expect much more from a book this size. If you're looking for more information or details, this isn't the book for you.

I love this book!!! Ima newbie to all of this, and this book is a good place to start if you know nothing about the trees around. It's easy to narrow down tree types, and get (if nothing else) the family of your tree. My only problem is that some of the pictures show acorns, flowers, and buds as a way to narrow down specific tree types, but presently, the trees I'm searching for don't have any of the above. Despite this, I'm still a happy camper :) and until the tree flowers and blooms, I'll just Google the 2 or 3 types I've narrowed it down to with my phone to find the correct tree. I'm happy. It's good. ðŸ˜Å½

This is a great book doesnt have much on bark identifying but will give you the basics

The Golden Field Guide book "Trees Of North America" is an excellent resource. This reference work shows all classes and species native to North America. This work shows families of trees and their common characteristics. Each individual species has excellent illustrations of bark, leaves, nuts/fruit and a map of its native range. Each species has a concise text decription with distribution information, reproduction details, heights and life expectancy. This book meets the high standard for Golden Field Guide books and I recommend it to those interested in the giants of our land - the trees, both the largest and longest-lived life forms on our planet. Five Stars.

I enjoy reading this book because of the vast information about the trees as well as the pictures of the branches with the seeds and the specific locations of them. Great book. Thank you Kindle!

This book feels like a bit of a throwback...the production value is very mid-1970, and the illustration style reminds me of the old "Back to Basics" book and its Time-Life / Readers Digest ilk. Fortunately, trees don't evolve very quickly. Get past the cosmetics, and you will find this to be a very handy little book comprehensive enough to be a home study reference yet small enough to pack along as a field guide. Organization is primarily by taxonomic groupings (including a good mix of common and Latin names), and a worthy effort has been made to include examples of the most common genera and species within each group, even those which are non-native. Color illustration pages are densely packed with clear, informative drawings indicating the most recognizable variations between related species. Opposing text pages include short descriptions focused mainly on identifying characteristics but also provide some interesting plant lore and anecdotal information. Almost all species include a helpful range map to help prioritize your study. One nice feature is a short 8-page visual quick-reference guide which allows you to get a sense for the typical character of the major tree families at a glance. Another very thoughtful feature of the book are little "comparison" sections that dedicate a little space to helping you key in on the distinguishing features of trees which are the most superficially similar. Examples include how to differentiate soft and hard pines, how to sort out spruces and hemlocks from true and Douglas firs, and how to discriminate cypresses from junipers. To their credit, the authors also expand the scope of the book to include a number of woody plants which seldom grow to be much more than shrubs - a nice addition which contributes to the feel of completeness. My one minor complaint is that no real identification key is included...to figure out what a particular tree is, you need to flip through the book to do a bit of visual searching. Given that many tree species are fairly distinctive, however, this is not a serious flaw.I highly recommend this book for anyone with an interest in trees or tree identification - and for less than $10, you can't beat the price!

“John Fry takes you behind the scenes of the sport of skiing, from the first 25 cents-a-day rope tow to the 72-dollar-a-day lift ticket at today’s mega-resorts. Fry has been there and written about how and why it all happened. His observations are a must-read book for anyone who has ever been on a pair of skis or a snowboard.” (Warren Miller, skiing’s foremost filmmaker)“A deftly delineated look at skiing’s last half-century. Great, perceptive insights into the world of racing, the Olympics, the World Cup, ski publishing, and the growth of skiing as an industry and a sport, told with wit, warmth and personal introspection and incisiveness.” (Doug Pfeiffer, former editor of Skiing Magazine and “father” of freestyle skiing.)

The story told here encompasses (mostly) the development of skiing and its related aspects from the World War II era onward. Needless to say a broader time frame is possible, but this allows the author to catalog a more intense development era in greater detail. And he does this effectively. Many folks who visit the modern day resorts probably figure this was all invented just 10 years ago. But the commitment of early industry visionaries determined to build a sport, often with tenuous financial resources, is fascinating. It could easily have never come to pass if all the variables didn't fall into place--pioneering spirit, pursuit of dreams, a robust post-war economy and sense of well-being, etc. But it obviously worked--at least during the growth/boom years. Now the industry is more populated by bean-counters and the original personalities who were responsible for the success have died off, leaving what is left as mere business model to perpetuate as opposed to the wonderful enthusiasm as delivered by the originators (at least in large measure). But interesting nonetheless if skiing and the winter sports environment are of interest in your life.

The master has written a great book that all skiers should read

John Fry has done a wonderful job of covering the history of skiing in the United States. As an enthusiast who has been skiing for 60 years, I enjoyed reliving the details of the evolution of my favorite sport. The book is comprehensive and yet fascinating in every chapter. Books like this can sometimes be overly detailed with stories that are not all that interesting or relevant but this is not one of them. It is a great read that is hard to put down!

All skiers should read. ALL.

Great background material. I've put it on the shelf and am using it as a reference for my work in ski areas.

Great history of Skiing

This is just a great book about the world of skiing. John Fry combines a complete knowledge of skiing with a terrific writing style that makes every page a joy to read.

I had had the original coffee table sized edition of this book and although it is essentially the same, some of the old photos and captions are missing.from this newer downsized edition. My original became lost in one of our many moves,If anyone has one of the original coffee table sized edition for sale ,please contact me.Thanks.

"The unexpected connections made by Day are linked creatively with the sound logic of a true authority. At one point he juxtaposes Oscar Wilde and Public Enemy and questions man's attraction to both seduction and punishment. Embedded in the prose are aphoristic statements, like "to find the future listen for acronyms." Filled with insightful observations on contemporary urbanism, Day is a longtime SCI-Arc professor and has also taught at Yale." – Mike Sonksen, KCET "Highly original and provocative book by LA-based architect Joe Day that explores the societal and architectural connections between two institutions that have expanded tenfold since the 1970s: museums and prisons." – Frances Anderton, Design & Architecture "Joe Day, an accomplished architect and academic teaching at SCI-Arc and Yale, presents a daunting traverse through the dialectical territory between visual pleasure and psychological pain. His taxonomy of meticulous diagrams and carefully curated photographs of the subject buildings relentlessly synthesizes and interrogates the nuances that transect our most dominant socio-cultural edifices within late-capital: museums and prisons." – John Southern, Archinect "…a fascinating new book by Joe Day, an L.A. architect who teaches at the Southern California Institute of Architecture, charts not just the history of jails but the surprisingly broad ― and telling ― overlap between prison and museum design." â€“ Christopher Hawthorne, Los Angeles Times "... Corrections and Collections is an exploration of themese of concealment and display, an intellectual pursuit soon surely to inform new buildings by this enviably erudite architect." - Raymund Ryan, The Architectural Review

Corrections and Collections will make you think twice about the architecture of institutions--jails and museums-- that anchor both ends of our urban landscape...and what they oddly have in common. The scope of this work is focused on America, but goes global with comparisons with how other cultures deal with fine art and first offenders. Great read!
