Nice map! Really fun. Glad I found it.

Great map to go with various paintings and pictures of Saint Paul and Mpls

A great map of the Twin Cities, fun to look at, but doesn't quite include my area (Plymouth). Take a close look before buying it is you are looking for a specific area...

My wife and I received this as a house warming gift. It now hangs on our dining room wall. All of our friends have spent some time poring over the little spots - where they grew up, where they live now, where friends lived. Everyone always finds something new and interesting, and we just let our eyes roam over it from time to time. The art is inspired by Viking themes of ships, fire, and ice, and it makes the work much more fun to enjoy.Heartily recommended.

Gathering Blue, the second in the Giver quartet by Lois Lowry, follows the story of Kira, an orphaned girl. In a world where physical differences are shunned and the bearers cast out, Kira finds herself alone and vulnerable when her mother suddenly dies. As her only protector, Kira’s mother valiantly fought for the disabled girl’s right to exist in such a harsh community. Without her, Kira has become a target of certain villagers looking to claim the land where her home once sat, even if it means expelling her from the community. After being called into a hearing with the Council of Guardians to determine her fate, Kira is pleased to learn that her life will be spared due to her special talent. Under the watchful eyes of the Guardians, Kira undertakes the daunting task set before her by the Elders, and in doing so discovers things about herself and her community that she never would have imagined possible. While this is the second book in the Giver quartet, I find if only fair to note that there aren’t any characters from the original novel in this book. Set in the same dystopian future Earth, Kira’s village is less advanced and the residents have life harsher. Where the Giver had an almost futuristic feel to it, through their advancements and gadgets, Gathering Blue has a very medieval feel, where all but the most privileged of residents reside in clay and thatch “cotts” with little to no food. I ended up reading this as part of a Summer reading challenge with my 10-year-old and I honestly can say that I don’t think I ever would have read it otherwise. But now that I have read it, I want to read the remaining two books to see where this all goes. With both Gathering Blue and The Giver, Lois Lowry has created a fictional dystopia that has a hint of real life and modern prejudices and thoughts woven in. No, modern day America does not cast out the infirm, disabled or elderly; but we do have a way of treating them as less of a person unless they have something that we want or a knowledge that we can use. Gathering Blue brings that issue to the forefront in such a way that will cause the reader to think about Kira’s situation and hopefully be kinder to those around them.

This one is probably took me the longest to read out of all 4 of the books. If you agree, just keep reading - it gets so much better! Once I got toward the end, I flew through it and then flew through the next two books.Gathering Blue is not seemingly related to The Giver (or so we think); it takes place in the same universe, but a totally different type of community - almost an exact opposite of Jonas's community in The Giver. Kira's village is more primal; if you can't contribute and fend for yourself, you're useless. Kira, who suddenly finds herself parentless and alone in this hostile world, must find a way to prove herself to her community, despite being crippled. Her only friend in the world is a kind little boy, Matty, and his canine companion, Branch. Kira, with no parents to defend her place in the village, must face the judgement of the council. It is the council that decides Kira's fate - and to her surprise, they motion for her to remain in the society, and contribute the same way as her mother, through sewing and embroidery. It is through exercising her skills that Kira discovers her strange powers that she cannot explain, and uncovering dark secrets held by the village.

After reading The Giver and loving it I went to see the movie, which was such a powerful film!!! I was definitely riding a high from this book and was eager to continue the series. Before I started reading The Gathering Blue I learned that it did not however, follow Jonas, nor was it based on his community that he lived in. So, I approached this story, saddened, but with the knowledge and understanding that it was to be a completely different story. There were some things that I did like about The Gathering Blue, but overall I thought the story was very slow, and it took a long time for things to happen, or events to unfold in this story v.s. The Giver.I did like that this story took place I guess you would say in the same "world" as The Giver, but in a different community with its own set of unique rules. For those of you wondering if you should read The Gathering Blue to continue the series my answer is still yes, while this book is harder to get through, I can see where certain characters will play an important role in the books to come. I have already started book three in the series , The Messenger, and some of the secondary characters from The Gathering Blue are now Main characters in The Messenger. I am not far in the book right now, but I can confirm that Jonas and Gabe both make an appearance.

I found the writing in this novel not nearly as compelling as "The Giver." There is exactly one character who is delineated well, and that is Matt. Also, frankly, his dog.In "The Giver," I could see, hear, and imagine the characters. In this book, I could not. I have no idea what Kari looks like, besides her crippled leg. Almost none of the characters have names, beyond being called the butcher, the weavers, the tykes, the people who live there in this unspecified community where everyone is cruel. We see no descriptions whatsoever of Kari's supposedly magical threading. We just get endless lessons on plant dyes. There is some description of Thomas's carving, and a little bit of Jo's singing. However, there is not enough explanation to be compelling and make you wonder why these particular children are so magical, and craved and imprisoned by the evil portions of the elite community.I thought I paid too much for this ultimately unsatisfying book. I really want to see more about Jonas, whose gift was more fully and joyfully described. I will look for subsequent books at my library, and buy them if they prove to be better than this last one.

Review

"The book is filled with photographs, letters, drawings and sundry scrapbook items (J.F.K. and Jackie's wedding invitation, a letter from Macy's encouraging her to model) culled from Edie's overstuffed and truly inspiring archives." --The New York Times

From the Author

As the immediate family of Edith Bouvier Beale, it is with great pleasure and pride that we present this collection of work after almost half a century of collecting dust in family archives. Following her death in 2002 our family began the heartbreaking task of putting my aunt, Little Edie's, remaining possessions in order. Nostalgic and captivated, I carefully sifted thought the contents of the boxes, suitcases, and scrapbooks that she had saved over the decades: photographs, journals, writings, poetry, sketches, and letters were packaged in small, labeled bundles (an arrangement that eventually made the publication of this collection possible), that presented an insightful chronology of Little Edie's life. Although Little and Big Edie Beale were thrust into the public's view following the release of the Grey Gardens documentary, the true story of Little Edie's life has essentially remained a mystery since the mid 1950's. In contrast to the documentary, what became strikingly clear was the love, dedication, and seeming normalcy of her privileged youth. Filled with family vacations, costume parties, soirées, fashin shows, fundraising functions, and weekly trips to the cinema, the Beale family lived a remarkably loving life within the Hamptons high society of the early 20th century. I found an astounding number of photographs, letters, and poems from her childhood, presenting quite the contrast to the cats and decrepitude of Grey Gardens during the 1970s. However, as was reflected in various letters, bank statements, and attorney correspondences, as the economic pressures of the Depression years set it, life began to change for little Edie at Grey Gardens, gradually transforming into the familiar scene of the 1970s documentary. Nonetheless, despite the Beale's steady economic decline over the course of almost half a decade, the loving and graceful writings from these years make their continued creativity, dedication to one and other, good nature, and attempt to maintain their dignity conspicuously clear. Immediately following my Aunt Edie's death, I began the arduous process of reconstructing her young life in order to compile this collection. As a close family member, I have enjoyed the privilege of having Edie's humor and wisdom in my life, and as a result this anthology was conceived with deep dedication, understanding, and personal connection. We hope this book will help see Edie differently and with a deeper appreciation of how she grew into the familiar character from the Grey Gardens documentary. We hope not to only restore her dignity, but also make known her sensitivity, passion, and genius that we, as her family, remember vividly. It was clear that Little Edie wanted her story to be shared.

If you are a fan of the Maysles Brothers movies from The Criterion Collection, and also the HBO film starring Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore, this is a must have. This book fills in all of the blanks of both Big Edie, and Little Edie using photographs from Their collection. If you feel as if you knew them before, this treasure trove really cements what their lives were like before The Great Depression hit, and it draws you that much closer to them.A remarkable testament to two lives that were inseparably intertwined. It will make you long to step back in time to those wonderful days gone by.

The book is good, however, I was surprised at it being just pictures and not a full story. I probably did not read all the reviews well enough. Still interesting family history.

This is a wonderful book detailing the life of "Little Edie" Beale of Grey Gardens fame. Lovely pictures and poetry written by Edie as child, her deb and post-deb years, also give a fascinating portrait of society life in the 30's 40's and 50's. There are also pictures of Phelan Beale, her father, and, of course, "Big Edie", her mother. A charming narrative as well. My only complaint is that it is a bit over-priced. Other than that, if you are a true Grey Gardens fan, you will love this beautiful tribute to a unique, individualistic and "staunch" character.

I really enjoyed all the pages, the pictures; the writings of little Edie. The book gives one a sense of what might have been.A synopsis perhaps on many of our lives that are rich with stories but we don't have the famous name or connection formost people to notice. Everyone should really see the documentary of Grey Gardens and the recent film with DrewBarrymore who did a splendid job portraying little Edie. It's a Keeper.

This is a lovely book. Sadly most, if not all of the photos are online to view. The images are large and the writing and other items shared are really fun to see.

A must for every grey garden fan, put together beautifully!

I love the variety of photos included in the book, but some of the pictures were blown up so large that they look distorted. Also, for the price of the book, you think that some of the photos would have been cleaned up a little. Some photos look like they were processed with a scratched or dirty negative and for aesthetics, could have been improved before publishing. Some of the captions also are either redundant and poorly edited, but let's be honest, it's really about the pictures! It would have been nice for some of the photos to not have been enlarged at all rather than filled a page with one large, grainy shot. Finally, most of the poetry isn't dated... it would be nice to know if it were written as a child or an adult.

What a story. Great photos. Love the book!!
