A fun book. The author is a real character! She seems utterly convinced that urine is the key to the future and refers to it simply as "liquid gold" throughout the book. She makes statements about how it's use "will" be implemented in the future without a thought to the possibility that it might not be the case. She explains how urine contains nutrients that plants can use and talks about how to use it in compost or spray crops with it. She also just breifly mentions how it stinks and explains that if it's sealed off from air then you won't smell it but offers no explanation of how to achieve such a storage situation. She also mentions that it contains a lot of salt and after a few years of use the salts will build up and prevent your crops from growing or even being able to sprout, but once again little was said to remedy this except that there are types of plants that can uptake salts and then be removed but she provides no information about how effective this actually is. An interesting book and I'm glad I read it, but after reading this book I am actually more skeptical about the practicality of using urine as fertilizer than I was before.

Though I had heard of this book years ago, I finally got a copy of it just a few days ago.I think I was expecting "more" - but then again - I had just finished reading "The Humanure Handbook" by Joseph Jenkins, and was expecting a similar treatment of the subject.Steinfeld makes all the right points and does so in an interesting manner, but her method is more one of presenting possibilities than one of presenting a plan. It seems as though she is "reporting" - showing us pictures and descriptions of how folks have used urine. She doesn't seem to have a "passion" for the subject - something that people who do things radically different from others generally need to see the project through. Steinfeld is also diametrically opposed to Jenkins on best methods: She suggests separating and using the urine separately while "disposing" of the solid waste material by conventional methods. Jenkins is quite adamant about collecting and using liquids and solids together and recycling them both - a much more ecological and economically-sensible suggestion.(I'd LOVE to see these two authors review each others books!)I would still recommend this book for folks with a couple of *extra* dollars to spend or those just interested in learning how people past and present use urine. For those interested in shouldering the greater responsibility of properly, safely, and beneficially recycling their ALL of their "waste" I would suggest "The Humanure Handbook" instead. In all fairness and to Steinfeld's credit, "The lore and logic of using urine to grow plants" is an accurate description of this book's scope.

I have always wondered why a dog lifts his leg to pee on a plant. Guess God knew if man didn't have enough smarts then His animals would do the job the natural way that would make His plants grow healthy and strong. I spent several years in the military over in Germany and wondered why they sprayed human waste on thier food growing in the fields there. Thought it was a very dangerous practice at that time. Now I have a very different way of thinking. I pee on my yard plants now and they are beautiful. Save yourself tons of money buying chemicals because pee is free!!!

The is a smart, thoughtful book on an important subject. Despite the cartoon cover, the author approaches the use and disposal of urine in a practical and user friendly way. She presents convincing scientific information supporting the healthful use of urine for growing plants. Also, she gives good information on composting toilets. This is a timely subject for two reasons: first, the recapture of the nitrogen and other resources that are contained in the urine. Second: the disposal of urine without polluting drinking water. Like the Humanure book, this book makes the important point that the use of pure water to flush wastes away into the sewer system is a very poor use of very scarce resources.Highly recommend.

For anyone interested in this sort of thing "Practicality". This book is fun and interesting. I loved it. Very Easy read. Lots of techniques used around the world on urine separating toilents; along with ideas on how to create you own urinals. I acually made one after reading this book and am using it as liquid fertilizer in my yard. The design is so clean and out of the way that not even my wife was bothered by it!

I was quite disappointed in the research behind the urine use stories. I learned almost nothing substantive...just got more examples and testimonials. Author's heart is int he right place, but not much science to explain and support.

Great book, informative and entertaining.

Nice history but little in the way of structured practical information. Buy "Create an Oasis with Greywater" instead.

The Theory and Craft of Digital Preservation, by Trevor Owens

Review

"An indispensable handbook that will be kept close at hand―used, reached for, and above all really read by those seeking a conceptual framework through which to understand the practicalities of grappling with the complex new reality of digital objects. Opening up the most theoretically sophisticated body of research in digital platforms to an entirely new audience while simultaneously equipping that audience with the conceptual background they need to function as experts in today's information environment, Owens's book is a practical, even-handed, and clear-eyed walkthrough of day-to-day situations. I expect it will be widely adopted in library and information science courses." (Matthew G. Kirschenbaum, University of Maryland, College Park, author of Track Changes: A Literary History of Word Processing)"Acknowledging that we are part of 'a long-standing and worldwide tradition of memory keepers,' Trevor Owens challenges us to use the lessons learned in traditional preservation as we approach digital preservation. Distinguishing digital preservation as craft rather than science, Owens provides reassurance to all of us worried about finding the 'silver bullet.' It does not and should not exist!" (David S. Ferriero, Archivist of the United States, National Archives and Records Administration)"A superb introduction to both the why and how of preserving digital cultural heritage. The Theory and Craft of Digital Preservation highlights history and theory, explains technology, and then moves on to practice, offering clear advice backed by examples. This is an ideal text for anyone interested in archives in the digital era." (Steven Lubar, Brown University, author of Inside the Lost Museum: Curating, Past and Present)"Digital preservation, unlike the one-time process for preserving print, is an ongoing, changing responsibility for those who bear the responsibility of preserving our history and cultural heritage. Trevor Owens, a leader in the field, uses his experience and deep knowledge to show how the tools of the futurist can document the past. His axioms for digital preservation will guide novices and experts alike." (Deanna Marcum, Ithaka S+R)"Owens blends the perspectives of archivist and media archaeologist to provide a richly satisfying appraisal―at once historical synthesis, practical guide, and philosophical overview―of what digital preservation can be. Its standout feature is a wise, practical approach for guiding even the smallest institutions in using technology for the ‘craft’ of preservation." (Alan Liu, The University of California, Santa Barbara, author of The Laws of Cool: Knowledge Work and the Culture of Information)"Owens's book is a call to action. As he so eloquently points out, we are far past the time to begin putting actions behind our words when it comes to digital preservation. This book provides digital preservation practitioners with an up-to-date road map for thinking about, and more importantly, doing our work." (Natalie M. Baur, Biblioteca Daniel Cosío Villegas, El Colegio de México)

Good book, fast shipping, excellent condition. This book came in exactly as expected and the content is perfect for a freshman boy. My son had to write a short paper over the summer for the first day of school, and thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story is about a young man who has lost his way and when his life completely changes (because his living situation does), he not only thrives physically but also learns life lessons along the way. He learns that everyone is not as fortunate as he is, although it may not appear to him that he IS fortunate, and he also learns the value in putting other people first. He learns to appreciate the selfless acts of others and pay those acts forward to help the less fortunate. My son is not an avid reader and it was no problem getting him to stay focused on this story. Well written, well packaged, well shipped. Highly recommend for this age group and from this seller.

From jail to the top of the world!Basically, the plot of this book is a kid named Peak Marcello (whose parents use to be climbers) tries to climb a skyscraper but gets caught by the police who thought he was a terrorist right before he made it to the top. Then in trial his dad shows up and offers to take Peak to Tibet,China away from New York in hope that eventually people would forget about his climb. Then, Peak’s dad surprises him and takes him to climb Mt. Everest. As I mentioned the book starts out in New York. Before he climbs Everest, his dad takes him to Tibet, China to get his climbing gear. After getting his climbing gear, the rest of the book takes place on Mt. Everest. The Main characters are Peak,Peak’s Dad and Mom,The Two Peas (Peak’s twin sisters), and his language arts teacher. The Main character,Peak, has an angry grudge towards his father for leaving them when Peak was little; however, as they get farther up the mountain they start to trust each other and that grudge slowly wears out.The book is written in a perspective where Peak is writing this book in a moleskine notebook as he climbs Mt. Everest. He explains this at the beginning of the book. I think the author of this book (Roland Smith) nailed the way the story is being told. The way it’s written, Peak sounds just like a fourteen year old boy trying to reach the top of Everest. If that’s what the author was going for, he did a great job.I think the theme of this book is that it’s not the mountain that matters,it’s what lies at the bottom. I know this because on the last page of the book (page 246) Peak says: “The only thing you’ll find on the summit of Mount Everest is a divine view. The things that really matter lie far below.” I don’t think the author would have made those the last two sentences if he didn’t want the reader to remember that.Overall, I thought the book was great! I couldn’t put it down!

Peak is the ultimate action/survival/friendship/adventure story! Peak opens with the retelling of the time that Peak Marcello scaled a skyscraper in New York, then being arrested for the feat and taken to court. Peak’s parents were there and his biological father is presented the opportunity to take Peak to Thailand for a while, or send him to jail in New York City. Peak then embarks on the trip with his father to Thailand; only to realize that they are not going to Thailand at all. They are going to climb Mount Everest. They are going to Kathmandu. Peak’s father needs to ramp up his business with the climbing company, so to get publicity he tries to get Peak to become the world’s youngest person to scale the mountain.Peak is then set up to go climbing, after days upon days Peak fights to get to the summit. Disease is spread throughout the entire camp and many people leave the mountain. Some people even die on the trek up. As Peak rears the summit he is faced with a huge decision. It’s up to you to find out what he does next.• Peak Marcello- Peak is the main character; he climbs Mount Everest with hopes of becoming the youngest person in the world to reach the summit. Very bold and courageous, but tends to keep to himself.• Josh- Peak’s biological father, helps Peak try to reach the summit. Hard on the outside, but soft on the inside.• Sun-Jo- A boy only six days older than Peak, is a fellow competitor to become the youngest to reach the summit. He and Peak are in a fight for duration of the book. Smart and clever, but friendly towards Peak.• Zopa- The monk that guides Sun-Jo and Peak up Everest, he cares deeply for Sun-Jo. Zopa is very old and wise, with plenty of advice to give to those in need.• Holly Angelo- a reporter that follows Peak up the mountain and befriends him on the way. Very nosy, but you can tell that she does care about Peak.• The Twins- Paula and Patrice; Peak’s twin sisters, they are actually only his half-sisters though. Very small and tend to laugh a lot.• Yogi and Yash- Two Sherpas that accompany Peak and Sun-Jo up Mount Everest. The two tend to keep to themselves during the book, but do provide some helpful information to Peak and sun-Jo.• Teri Marcello- Peak’s mother. She loves Peak but doesn’t fully approve of him climbing Everest due to a serious climbing injury she suffered.A major theme throughout this book is Perseverance. Peak battles major winds and harsh, snowy weather. Peak also feels he needs to improve his relationship with Josh, although Josh shows no sign of love for Peak. Peak is also shocked by the amount of people with disease. As the book progresses he shows a little more care for Peak. Peak has to have perseverance to make it up the mountain. This book is dull in the beginning and a little confusing, but as it proceeds the story develops and blooms into a wonderful book! I would recommend it to someone who likes to wonder why characters make certain decisions. Peak provides a wonderful friendship story of Peak and Sun-Jo, and how Peak develops empathy for Sun-Jo. Peak is an overall good book, for everyone!

Fantastic story for middle school girls or boys (and adults too!). This has all the elements of a great story with a great plot, good character development and growth for the protagonist. Good vocabulary and sentence structure for growing reading proficiency etc. I would definitely recommend.

I chose this book as a read aloud to summer school students. Smith provides the perfect combination at adventure and imagination. Students can relate and identify with the characters of Peak and Sung-Jo. Twists and turns. I would highly recommend this book to students, teachers and anyone who wants an adventure without leaving their reading chair!

I read this with orally with my teenage grandson who has ADD. He tried reading it on his own, got tangled up in the vocabulary, lost the meaning of the sentences, and finally his interest.I like orally reading with him and he brought this book. We took turns reading, stopping at the unknown words and discussing the book. When we fininished we both felt satisfied. While this in considered teen literature, it is interesting to adults too. In fact the young man developed into a very responsible young adult by the end of the book.
