Obviously I didn't read it when I was supposed to read it.Time spent on the "to read" shelf: 4 years.Days spent reading it: 2 months.Why I read it: I was supposed to read it before I helped lead a small group. I felt bad about never having read it, so I added it to this list and completed my assignment years after it was originally given.Brief review: This book is a Northpoint Church resource that talks about how they created a small group environment at their church. I have mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I recognize how important community is in spiritual development. So I think there are a few helpful pointers in this book about how that is accomplished.But for the most part, this book really rehashes old business models and applies them to small groups. For instance one point of the book is "Clarify the win." Make sure you know what your end goal is. Gee, that sounds like Business class 101 to me. We need to know our goal to get there. I get it. Another section was about having reasonable criteria for small group leaders. Have quality leaders, but don't expect them to be perfect. Done.In another section of the book they talk about how they want to see their small groups multiplying. SO every 1.5 years the group splits, but also grows. The chart goes:Year/# of people0/121.5/243/484/96etc. etc.However they never explain how these groups magically grow (especially considering they are CLOSED groups). It was like they were saying:Step 1. Start small group.Step 2. Double in size in a year and a half.Step 3. Start new small group.It reminds me of the only episode I ever saw of Southpark with these underwear gnomes whose motto was: Phase 1--Steal underwear. Phase 2-- Phase 3--Profit!How do you do that? How do you double the small group size? I realize a church like Northpoint has new people coming and going all the time. But the old "if you build it they will come" mentality does not work for small groups in most churches, making this point practically worthless for those churches.And one more personal pet peeve. Andy Stanley's name is prominently on the front cover, but I would be shocked if he wrote anything besides the introduction that is about 5 pages long. If you write a book, put your name on the cover. If you write the intro you're not the author! You're the "With intro written by" guy. His name is on the cover because it is his church and it will help sell this book. That's annoying to me. We might as well grab John Grisham, make him write an intro and put his name on the front cover of any book we want to sell. Why not? Ok, enough ranting.So I did enjoy some of what is in this book. The opening chapters deal a lot with why people need a community they can fit into. There is a profound need in the human soul that needs community, and I think this book explores that need well. It gives us a glimpse of a biblical theology for small groups.There are a number of small points that are applicable to anyone working on developing or strengthening their small groups. But this is not a book about how to start, grow, and develop your small groups. It is a big picture book that is not particularly practical for smaller churches, in my opinion. Not that the ideas are bad or wrong, they just are not for general application. I was hoping for something more and simply did not get it. Good thing this book was reasonably short.Favorite quote: "Disconnected people tend to be more selfish. Isolation breeds selfishness."Stars: 2 out of 5Final Word: Disappointing.

About two months ago, I began the adventure of coordinating the small groups ministry at my church. I've been in small groups, I lead a small group with my wife, but outside of student ministries, I had never really coordinating a program like this before. I feel overwhelmed that I simply don't know enough or have enough experience. So I asked all my smarter, more experienced friends to tell me what they've read that can help me lay a good foundation for helping coordinate this really crucial ministry. A few of them mentioned Creating Community, and so I bought it for my e-reader. It was so good, it took me less than 24 hours to read. "We want them to grow in their intimacy with God, community with insiders, and influence with outsiders."For a while now, I have had a burden for a more intentional system for our small groups. We've had this system of scattered and dis-unified small groups for a while now, and there isn't a lot of clear direction. I feel just like Andy Stanley did early on in North Point's history. "We all sensed a need to bring a layer of structure and intentionality to our otherwise random and unstructured friendships" (pg. 12).The book is written primarily by Bill Willits, who is the director of the small groups at North Point Community Church in Atlanta, Georgia. He talks a lot about how they arrived at how they do groups now and how they thought strategically about how to grow it into a system that moves people toward a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and with each other. This combination of real-life scenario and theoretical practice is extremely insightful and challenging.Creating Community is orderly, succinct and thorough; a combination you don't find in many "how-to-ministry" books. It has challenged many of my preconceived notions of what community looks like in the church and how to best foster really meaningful relationships in those communities. If your heart is to help create communities that create real life change in people, than Creating Community is simply a must-read.

This is a wonderful book about creating a community, and not necessarily in church. It's so easy to just go to church and follow the motions without ever REALLY becoming connected. Creating a community inside the church is what God intended for us to do. In order to work together effectively, you need to know that you can rely on your church family and be able to trust and confide in them. It takes work; it's not something that just happens. This book leads you deeper on how to allow that to happen. My husband purchased this book when we were hosting small groups at our house and we had the best session that we'd ever had (and we hosted groups for SEVERAL sessions prior to this). People opened up and told their testimonies and it was because there are tips on how to break the ice and make it easier to open up. No one wants to open up and become vulnerable in a group of people they don't really know, but it's almost necessary. We highly recommend this book if you currently lead, are thinking about leading or are starting to put small groups together. This book was an excellent book for me since I have been pondering the reality of retiring early from my job and start a stock trading business. Robert Kiyosaki has written a very open and honest book about financial realities he himself has lived through. He explains that in transitioning from an employee to an entrepreneur you are trading "security" for opportunity and freedom. Few people have the ability to stay focused on winning in their business while operating sanely and intelligently without money. After reading this book many would be entrepreneurs may very well go back to the security of a weekly paycheck. Operating any kind of business requires a very long educational process before you ever make a dime. How many readers can work years with out a return on their investment of time and money? The author recommends being a student before ever taking the leap. If you want to open a restaurant then first work in one to learn the ropes. Your business must create monthly cash flow if it is to survive its infancy and move on to being a profitable and self sufficient business. If it does not make money by a predetermined time you will have to know when to cut your losses and move on. I would highly recommend this book to those considering quitting their job and striking out on their own. Or for those that already have and are struggling to be successful. The book will either make you realize that you are not cut out to be a business owner so you need to shut up and get back to work, or it will give you the tools to strike out and be successful because you value freedom and opportunity more than a paycheck.

It is hard to challenge certain truisms. Either you are musical or you are not. Artistic or not. A born entrepreneur or not. Here, the author challenges that last statement. He clearly affirms that anyone CAN be an entrepreneur, but he then spells out the all-important "BUT"s. But you must become at least competent at a core set of skills or don't even go into business. If you can't sell, you MUST take some readily available steps to learn it. There are no short-cuts here. But there is plentiful clear-cut advice.I had already been self-employed for seven years when I started reading. Within a very few chapters, I learned what aspects of my business were was stalled and how I could break free. One thing has led to another and I now enjoy tackling the necessary challenges. Every day has brought new achievements.Like the "Rich Dad" who mentored him, Mr. Kiyosaki has become a no-nonsense source of advice for people who want to do more than just yearn for a career in business. If you want a cheerleader, DO NOT look here. If you want a fantastic coach, suit up and play.

Great book, everyone should read this that is thinking about starting a future as an entrepreneur. Great sound advice to guide not what to think but how to think. People always review that his books don't have any answers or explicit instructions thats because there is no step 1-5 to getting a million dollars. His line of books teaches you how to think and how to understand the world around you to make sound decisions. Teach a man to think and he can start from anywhere with anything and work to create an idea and form that into a business. Give a man some steps and they won't know what to do as soon as the steps are done. This guy gets it and explains it really well.

This was a great book with great tips. I am not sure if a book can make a person an entrepreneur, and the author did allude to that but if you do feel inclined and want to start your own business this is an exceptional read.

I loved Rich Dad, Poor Dad.I then read Increase Your Financial IQ, and loved that too.Before You Quit Your Job continues to teach about the business world and how to start your own business and be successful. It is NOT more of the same info that was in RDPD and Financial IQ. I was concerned it would be, and I was pleasantly surprised. This is more about what types of businesses will be successful, how to set them up, and mostly the minset required for an entrepreneur who never wants to be an employee ever again! I sure can relate, and thank Mr Kiyosaki for this book and the valuable lessons, from an experienced businessman who's been there before, within.

It's t easier to connect with people who have experienced some of the same challenges as you. I'm also a veteran who loves the mission of never leaving a man/woman behind. I've always had a passion for helping others, by educating them. I am homeless as we speak, but by consistently reading: Rich Dad Poor Dad, Increase Your Financial IQ, Business of the 21st -Century and Cashflow Quadrant, I won't quit. I've always put others needs before my own, because it made me feel great! The helping hand that you're looking for, is at the end of your own arm. No more excuses for failing. This new bookmakes everything clearer in our profession. Thank you Robert for saving my life. Now I know how to solve more problems and change my children's financial future.

This ebook is short and concise. At first I didn't think I'd like knowing the answer to the question before I read the question. But, it turns out that I read only the question and then the answer. I don't have to fumble with reading all of the answers and making a "guess". I found that I'm remembering the material much faster than I was with a regular book I was using. I read through the ebook, go and do a practice quiz, and find I'm retaining the material much better. I would definitely recommend this ebook if you are serious about advancing from "General" to "Extra".

There are some books that are so well written, that bring the people and the time in which they live so brilliantly, that illumine so many events and issues, that help you, in short, to better understand our world and how it was formed, that you simply want to grab your friends and tell them in your most impassioned voice,"You must read this book." And while I have grabbed no friends, I have told several how absolutely splendid this book is. The response, in every case, has been disinterest. Thomas Francis Meagher? Who is he? Why haven't I heard of him before?This is a case where one needs to trust the author. Timothy Egan is one of our finest nonfiction writers, and while a couple of his books - especially his outstanding book on the Dust Bowl disaster of the 1930s - are on topics of broad interest, he sometimes has taken up subjects things we need to know about rather than think we want to know. And such is this book about Thomas Francis Meagher. Although he died relatively young, Meagher's live sweeps through some of the key events in Irish and American history. Born into a relatively well-to-do family in Ireland - something of a miracle given the extreme oppression of the Irish by the English, where extreme resistance to English rule could lead to death or being sold into slavery in either the Caribbean or the southern Colonies. The first chapter, on the history of the subjugation and cruel and systematic abuse of the Irish by the British, is a marvel of compressed history. There is not a paragraph that isn't fascinating, while the book lays out the world into which Meagher was born. While many of the priests who were his teachers and his parents cautioned patience in the face of British occupation - which meant lesser British lords living on lands that had previously belonged to the Irish who eked out lives in enforced poverty, Meagher constantly asked why the Irish put up with it. And it is his refusal to tolerate what he saw as injustice that drove his life.Every section of this book details a new chapter in Meagher's life, which also happens to be a chapter in the life of the place in which he lives. After first showing his resistance to English rule and his violent opposition to it, we see him in the United States, where the almost equally vexing treatment of the Irish by American immigrants who had established themselves in the country a bit earlier than these Irish newcomers. Egan's attempt to gain respect comes together with his repudiation of Southern slavery is the book's longest section - and the one that will be of the greatest general interest (if one of my other friends asks, I'll simply tell them that it is a book on one of the Civil War's most colorful military leaders) - tells of Meagher's not insubstantial role in the American Civil War, where he became commander of the famed Irish Brigade, which brought a degree of respect and acceptance they had not achieved before. Not that all Americans accepted the Irish overnight, but American's have always respected its war heroes, and now there were Irish ones.The final chapter of Meagher's life shows him and his wife going to North Dakota - which was far wilder and more rustic than when Teddy Roosevelt visited it a couple of decades later - as governor of the area. If one sees Meagher as a Quixote, always tilting against windmills, the vigilantism in the territory was more than he could oppose, and it might possibly have led to his mysterious death only a couple of years after the end of the Civil War. The book begins with the event. Meagher on the deck of a paddle boat at the head waters of the Missouri. He falls off the deck of the boat ad drowns. It is a mystery that has never been solved, though Egan takes a gallant and fairly convincing stab at resolving it.But the sheer scope of the story of Meagher, who was renowned for his ability to sway his fellows and in a land where great oratory made people the equivalent of today's rock stars (albeit, without the sex, drugs, or rock and roll, though with all the fame, celebrity, and packed houses where they spoke), is truly epic. Meagher stood out as one of the great public speakers of the age, and his heroism on the battlefield makes him a major, if peripheral figure in that conflict. But the genius of this books is how much it makes us understand so many things. The Irish Question. Resistance to English rule. Migration to America. The abuse of the Irish in the United States. The reasons why many went to war against the South. The Question of Slavery. The Civil War itself, along with many of its greatest battles. The end of the War. Western expansion. And we finally learn just how wild the wild west could be. All these aspects of Irish and American life are masterfully told, in a prose that carries us easily from one page to the next.If you read this book, it is possible that you will read a better one in the coming year. Possible, but not likely. I doubt that the book will garner Mr. Egan another National Book Award. Members of the award committee are apt to react as I did when I first had the opportunity to read this: Thomas Francis who? But while the book most definitely tells the story of one of the great Irish and Irish-American political activists, it also tells the stories of Ireland and America itself, and reveals things about both countries that most readers - and certainly this reader - had not previously known or understood. This is very likely going to stand as one of my favorite books of 2016 and I could, I would rush up to you in person and say straight to your face, "You must read this book." So do it.

I got this book on the recommendation of my mother; who ultimately wants to read it. I had no familiarity with Thomas Meagher, but the story, written by Egan is an easy read and very fluid. The first quarter of the book focuses on Meagher and his role in seeking to enlist people in the Irish Confederation. Egan does a really good job of discussing the oratory style of Meagher, in particular his accent, arousing speeches to the people, especially against the context of famine that was decimating the population.There are also really pleasant historical sidebars (not really a sidebar, but inclusion in the story?) of other particulars, such as the out migration of the Irish to Australia and Canada, elements that were supported by the British Crown. The death toll of the emigrants to the U.S., almost 1 in 5, is a staggering number that is seldom discussed. There is also background information regarding others as well throughout the story, giving insight into those who worked in the Irish Confederation, and throughout New York at various times.Meagher’s trip to Tasmania is also discussed, which, I had always been curious about the length of time it would take to get that far away to the penal colony (120 days). Perhaps there is a bit of irony in that the transport actually fed them and they wore no shackles. The time in Tasmania actually seems a bit like a resort, even if it was away from their homeland of Ireland. Meagher eventually leaves, but his note to his warden/parole oversight person is a bit priceless, he basically sent a same-day message that let them know he was heading out. I mention this message because it gives further insight into the type of character Meagher was and is throughout the book.While in the U.S., Meagher is highly regarded by those who knew him from Ireland. Eventually, Meagher becomes a union general and fights in the Civil War, specifically leading the Irish Brigade. Meagher’s status remained while in the U.S., especially as he was placed in a bit of a position to use it to recruit new troops; even though the initial causalities weighed heavily on Meagher. There is also really interesting insight into the Irish’s perception of fighting to free slaves; as that is one of the objections that is raised by many of the Irish when drafted or paid to fight for the Union. At the same time, Meagher’s own battle in championing for his men, especially in the area of promotion and recognition are addressed. Overall, there are some political elements from the Civil War that are often excluded that are brought into the picture. The drafting of the Irish, and the ensuing riots that lashed out at African Americans are also another historical element that are seldom discussed or addressed.The Civil War portion takes up the largest chunk of the book, but Meagher’s time in Montana is discussed for about 50-60 pages. During this time Meagher found himself at odds with vigilantes who were opposed to his authority, which was 2nd highest office in Montana, as a commission from Johnson. Meagher worked to continue to instill law in Montana, even at a time when it was pretty minimally populated and had a high leaning towards an old west type of rule.Overall, the book is really good, a quick read, and portrays the situation realistic with outside information into the stories of the time that are often overlooked. I’d really recommend it, and it gives a new insight into the Civil War, especially as it addresses internal conflict within the Union and between various groups.
