I came across this book in the Queer Sci-Fi Facebook group and was immediately grabbed by the description. I am a great lover of ghost stories, and this one had so much going for it. The boarding-school setting, the period, the distinctive and appealing characters, the mystery, and a wonderfully creepy atmosphere overall. And while this may not be something every reader cares about, I was extremely impressed with how well-written and free of egregious technical errors the book was. These authors obviously know their business. Nothing to throw me out of the riveting story. Reading this book was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. It is always a treat to find something in a genre you love that hits all the buttons so well. I will be eagerly looking forward to the next book to see where James's and William's next adventure takes them.
I purchased this book because of the 5 star rating and wasn’t disappointed! After all of the other Kindle male/male fantasy books I’ve read, this was nearly the top of the list for me.What I liked: the writing and storytelling are great! The ghostly suspense really kept me hanging on and anxious to turn to the next page. The romance is somewhat on the back burner to the main mystery but that was fine with me. I was much more interested in finding out what happened with Oliver than if the other boys would fall in love or not. What I didn’t like: there isnt much to write here! If I had to say something, I guess the length was short. But longer compared to the other kindle books I’ve purchased. I didn’t feel like anything had been left out or it could have been more detailed. It may be triggering for some people as it talks about hard topics like homophobia, rape, and physical abuse.Overall a light spooky read that will keep you wondering what will happen next!
It starts a little slow, but soon picks up steam. The first half of the book focuses on a very sweet budding romance between the two main characters, James and William. Set in a time of innocence, there is, refreshingly, no graphic sex or instalove. It does delve into darker subjects like opioid addiction and sexual abuse of a child. Then in the second half, the ghost story kicks into high gear, and from there, it's nonstop excitement. The ominous disappearance of James' roommate sends the boys on a determined quest for the truth behind the rumours of hauntings. The last few chapters and the climax are absolutely chilling and make the book a thrilling pageturner. I couldn't put it down. I stayed up half the night to finish it. Highly reccomended for those who love M/M romance, a good mystery or a spooky ghost story.
Such a unique and completely captivating tale that I absolutely adored! It’s creepy and scary, but hopeful and sweetly romantic. I was so hooked on this story I didn’t want to put it down- I needed to find out the secrets and what was coming next. But then I’d find myself setting it aside, because as much as I wanted to know what was coming, I didn’t want it to end. James and William, and the mystery that was Whisperwood, had me under their spell. The world building and the character development in this story were outstanding. James and William totally stole my heart and I wanted to be right there beside them as everything unraveled and came to a head. They are so different but so in sync and so caring with each other, I loved them! The secondary characters added a lot to this story and really helped bring it to life. The mystery and secrecy surrounding Whisperwood was so intriguing and made for such an interesting read. It's eerie and disturbing, and there's this overlying feeling of always being watched. It's heartbreaking at times, but like the title suggest, there is a light amongst the shadows.I really loved this book, it's so different from anything I've read before. And I'm so happy that it looks like we'll be getting more stories with James and William- I don't want their story to be over.
I liked this a lot. Carefully rendered, thoughtfully researched and written, effectively creepy and unnerving, and yet restrained in a way that is authentically British.Whisperwood (a fine Dickensian name) is a good school, but not a great school. Whisperwood is for those striving Brits who cannot afford Harrow or Eton (or whose sons are not quite up to that standard). It is also a school where parents put boys who have, for one reason or another, been deemed less than desirable at home. This is why James Spencer and William Esher have found their way here. William is a loner, whispered about by the other boys, but more or less left alone. James, on the other hand, appears to be less problematic, attractive and friendly; until we learn of the reason for his dismissal from home. Only Michael accepts James as he is, knowing the full truth, and this trust is at the center of their friendship. It is through these two young men (seventeen, what we would call juniors in high school) that the darker side of Whisperwood and its secrets gradually come to light. In a lovely, plausible touch, the authors use Victorian love poetry as a means of connection between James and William. It helps to pin the narrative in its time and place, but also works, in that oddly suppressed Victorian way, to help the boys express their shifting emotions without transgressing social mores of the time.Oddly, Whisperwood ends up being a sort of Hogwarts without the charm and magic – although there are supernatural powers at play, right from the start, in the rumors of ghosts that haunt the dormitories. What William and James are forced to confront is the unpunished wrong and cruelty in the world around them – in their own families, and in the history of the very place whose purpose is to educate and protect them. These boys – young men – have to deal with their own shame at who they are and then decide what to do in the face of far darker cruelty and injustice. Their inner strength, and their unshakable friendship, are their two most powerful weapons against the darkness. The authors are a lesbian couple in California who focus on YA books, and “A Light Amongst the Shadows†could easily make it in a YA-LGBT world. James and Michael’s burgeoning sexuality is both intense and chaste, and with good reason in James’ case. The authors handle this very neatly, piling on the romance without crossing the line. These characters are rich enough that we can let them hold onto some of their innocence. So much else is at stake within the bounds of Whisperwood. There are some complaints, which to me seems to be more the result of not having “mainstream†editorial departments who can catch every bit of false grammar or anachronistic lingo. Generally York and Altwood got it right, which is no mean feat. It felt British, and it felt nineteenth-century. They didn’t quite pull off the ring of Trollope, and that’s why it didn’t make five stars for me. But I bought the next book in the series, because I loved James Spencer and William Esher so much. I’m not ready to say goodbye.
