This book was wonderfully practical and succint. I think the author did a fine job challenging Americans to consider that other cultures are different, not necessarily wrong.I purchased this book in preparation for a semester abroad, and though it is targeted more towards Americans staying abroad for a longer period of time, I found all of the information relevant and helpful none-the-lessI have only 2 complaints about this book. First, many of the resources the author refers to are out of print or unavailable. That was a point of frustration because many of the books seemed like excellent resources. Also, unfortunately, this book was published just prior to 9/11, an event which significantly affects American travelers.Despite these shortcomings, I highly recommend this book for anyone spending significant time abroad!

This book has a lot of useful information, but it is a lot of the same information I got during orientations and such. I guess that means it's good information? I studied abroad in Japan for a year and I found this somewhat helpful for that.

Having lived overseas for extended periods over the past dozen years, I didn't learn as many new things as someone who may not have been there, but the information given is accurate, essential and very important if you are planning a major move or retirement in another country and culture. It is imperative you do your homework and don't just pack up spur of the moment.

I know it's a classic, but there are better books on the subject today...I found it a bit out of date.

These are David and Goliath stories, told beautifully by "environmental law's greatest storyteller," in the words of William Rodgers, himself one of the renowned environmental law professors of our era. Beginning with the Storm King Mountain case in New York (a project to cut the top off a mountain on the Hudson River to enhance power production for New York City), and ranging through cases in Japan (a road project threatening a Shinto shrine), to Canada (Native American cases to stop mammoth water projects), to Russia (a case to halt the government give-away of parks to private developers), these stories recount the remarkable transformation of environmental law around the world in the past forty-plus years. In the Philippines, a young lawyer of remarkable courage succeeds in having the legal rights of future generations recognized. In Chile, the controversy over an American's purchase of more than half a million acres of land in Tierra del Fuego prompts judicial consideration of the Chilean Constitution's "right to a clean environment," ushering in a new era of access to the country's courts and setting an example for the world. (Note that there is no such "right" in the U.S. Constitution.) One not only learns about the law here, but also about the historical context--whether New England, the Philippines, or the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal, in fact, is a story both inspiring and sobering. The story begins with the recognition that the Taj itself is deteriorating because of air pollution. In response to actions by the lone environmental lawyer who started it all (M.C. Mehta), the Indian courts have "closed many polluting facilities, relocated others, established a green belt, removed the most invasive of the souvenir shops, brought natural gas into the city, and accelerated construction of a heavy vehicle bypass. It has required new reports, engaged itself in decisions as minute as monitoring stations and parking lots, directed an allocation of Taj entrance fees to the city for its improvement, and issued contempt citations against actors it believed were responding too slowly, or not at all. "And yet, the air of Agra remains toxic, the Yanuma still stinks, and the marble faces continue to erode." As Houck observes near the end of his book, "Environmental protection remains a very hard road, against odds as steep as the human impulse to make as much money as quickly as possible, deny unpleasant news, and leave others holding the bag. By running against these instincts environmental law makes powerful enemies every day of its life, and few powerful friends. Not many people amass fortunes by treating nature kindly, nor do they get named for a dam or highway they didn't build. All the momentum runs the other way. "What environmental lawsuits do is to help balance the scales. Courts of law, to the extent they are impartial, are the one venue beyond routine capture by the money and politics that drive the other two branches of government." In every instance here, the real driver is a dogged individual or two taking on incredible odds, often at considerable personal risk. If your faith in the power of individual action has ever flagged, read this book.

Every day we are inundated with bad news about the health of our environment, but how much do we know about efforts of individuals around the world who enlighten and inspire the judicial systems in their countries to save the natural places that have deep significance to their countrymen. These individuals are lawyers, judges, government ministers, and dedicated citizens who spend years chipping away at monolithic bureaucracies and industries to stop illegal logging in the Philippines, defeat plans to dam the Acheloos river - the longest river in Greece that fed the once-fertile Thessaly plain, and prevent highway construction through a sacred forest and shrine in Japan. While most Americans are somewhat familiar with environmental laws in the United States designed to prevent air pollution, protect surface waters, or prevent illegal dumping of hazardous wastes, we never hear about the history of forest protection in Russia or the small group of Moscow citizens whose fight to protect an historic forest in the middle of the city led to a nationwide movement to save endangered forests around the country. It came as a surprise to this reader that the courts of India were willing to take over the role of government agencies and take on the formidable task of regulating industry themselves once they learned that air pollution was destroying the Taj Mahal and the health of everyone in Agra. Professor Houck skillfully weaves together the stories of the individuals, the laws, the judicial systems, and the landscapes that form the history of a people and the significance of saving those landscapes for the future. Preserving Russia's trees preserves water in their rivers, preventing clear cutting in Patagonia may save the economy of Chile. This is a rare book, with beautifully told stories, that brings environmental law to life and helps lawyers and non-lawyers alike understand that people around the world know the significance of saving a river or a forest will improve the quality of human life. We also learn that the laws and courts of the two largest economic powers of the northern hemisphere, the United States and Canada, lag far behind other countries in recognizing the importance of environmental protection and the rights of indigenous people.

I think everyone in leadership and particularly in leadership of a Christian or Denominational institution should read this. But since it is directly about Adventist Education, I think it should be a requirement before employment at an Adventist school/university, or even before taking a leadership role in the church. That's how relevant I think this book is.

Adds to the debate with some useful insights. By his own admission the author is not qualified to talk on the subject and thus what he presents is weakened by this.He could have strengthened his arguments by studying, quoting or referencing those who are qualified on this subject.Whatever the shortcomings - I read it through to the end.

Annderson hits the nail square on the head with the issues facing Adventist Education. And excellent read. No need to wait for your school to begin to fall apart, the insights by Anderson can and should be applied by all schools no matter their situation.

While working at an SDA school and witnessing the rampant decline and complacency, I slowly began to realize that though everyone seems to be aware of the problem, or at least the more obvious symptoms(financial and enrollment crises), nobody knows what we should do about it. That's how I found this book. Now, I don't know if the strategy in this book is the absolute best one to take, but when looking at the needs of my school, and reading some other books such as "Good to Great" and "Leading Change", I can tell that this strategy matches well with very well-researched change strategies for the corporate world.Shane Anderson's description of the problem, proposed strategy for revival, and many other great tips make this book a timely read for anyone involved in church leadership, teaching or school administration, or even concerned parents wondering about the future of SDA schools in America. Definitely worth the price!

Very good and in depth reading.

As a school board member I found this book to be a God sent of information that quickly alerted me to a handful of reasons that are now causing the decline of many of our schools, ranging from pure demographics to a loss of loyalty by SDA members and parents/even pastors, to the uniqueness of Adventism. An Adventism, Shane Anderson calls "A joyful prophetic calling". Of course the schools themselves have many challenges that pastor Anderson addresses. I was reassured to learn we don't have to water down our view of God in order to attract other denominations to keep our schools financially viable. Many of the problems were not obvious to me before I read the book. I now feel I personally have a God centered plan of attack that is not so motivated by financial urgency.

I first read this book when I was 13. I am now 66. Did it influence my life? Looking back, perhaps even more so than I had realized. It was 1963 when I read it. I had been reading dystopias and had just finished "Brave New World." There was so much talk about LSD, mescaline, peyote and other hallucinogens as being "mind-expanding" and all that stuff that is now history. One interesting point of history regarding Aldous Huxley's life. He died the day JFK was shot. He was taking LSD at the time because he wanted to experience death as fully as he could.The title was taken from William Blake who had said, "If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite." That quote and this book would later help Jim Morrison in naming his band, "The Doors."I read it with rapt attention. I was entranced. When I reread it recently, I was amazed at how much I remembered and how much of my life choices it had influenced.I do remember that I promised myself at that young age, that when I was older, I would try these drugs as the search for "God" and spirituality was very important to me then and is still now.In particular, I recall the passage where, staring at a simple chair, Huxley waxed eloquently about what the chair revealed about its maker. Most of all, I recall his referring to perceiving the "isness" of the chair.This book was originally published in 1954. It was an important book then and it remains so now. It is a "must-have" for the library of any seeker of the truth, any who seek "higher learning", (pun intended and not), any who are investigators of world spirituality. Very highly recommended.

This is a great book, but be sure to avoid the "Important Books" edition (the one with the black cover and red/green/white lettering). It is a bootleg printing of terrible quaity. The cover image is a low-resolution jpeg that's been stretched to more than twice its original size, the text inside was obviously edited in MS word without any care. Do not buy this edition, you will be better off reading from a computer screen.

This book didn’t blow my mind (mainly because anyone who’s versed in psychedelics has likely read more recent material than this 1952 book, as much progress has been made on the ideas Huxley discusses) however it presents some very interesting and valid thoughts and observances, especially for its time. It’s safe to say that several of his descriptions and assumptions were well ahead of their time and resonate with me by remaining relevant even in the present day.The one thing I didn’t like about the book is that I felt it went off subject and drifted too much with irrelevant subject matter - however - considering when it was written, this may have been necessary to paint an accurate picture and to articulate a comparison of “normal” reality for those unacquainted with LSD, psilocybin or Mescaline.I would recommend this read to anyone who likes Huxley and has an interest in the classic early writings on psychedelics.

The doors of perception is an interesting description of the author's experience with psychedelics but if you yourself have never tried them it might not be too interesting. Heaven and Hell is worth less attention unless you are really interested in art

i've never had someone parallel my thoughts on psilocybin so perfectly, yet in the absolute best wording possible... Worth a read for all of you who have had an eye opening trip and need to consolidate some of your thoughts. Huxley somehow predicted our building of perception when we would not solidify these theories until just recently with modern neuroscience. He did it with his own doors of perception, and excellent philosophical mindset. He predicted many things that are true. I was shocked when I found out this was written in the 50's. A true renegade of his time."Most of these modifiers of consciousness cannot now be taken except under doctor’s orders, or else illegally and at considerable risk. For unrestricted use the West has permitted only alcohol and tobacco. All the other chemical Doors in the Wall are labeled Dope, and their unauthorized takers are Fiends."

Great book! Aldous Huxley has some really great observations about his experience with mescaline, and interprets them in a very contemporary existentialist manner.

I don’t remember reading a book that’s so concise yet full of thought-provoking ideas in every paragraph. The second essay has a very unique approach to analyzing arts through their ability to induce a trip to the “ other world of the mind”.

Overall, I liked it. I thought that there were some good insights that will be helpful to me. I did think that it was verbose, and at times, it took way too many words to get to a point. I did like the way he wove things together.

We've had this calendar for 4 years and love it. The photos are beautiful. I am not a morning person, and changing the picture every morning (except Sundays, because Sat/Sun is one page) improves my mood significantly. We really enjoy the daily cat pictures. Also, the stand is very stable, so my cats haven't ever knocked it down - another bonus!

BEAUTIFUL calendar... I would give this 5 stars EXCEPT they reuse a lot of images... I bought the 2015 edition and the 2017 edition and even 10 days into the year I am seeing a lot of repetition... so the moral of the story is you can really only enjoy it one year unless you have the memory of a goldfish. Plus I think it's cheap of the publisher to just reuse so many images.... they are lucky they are getting the 3 stars I am giving, that is all for quality of images and the fact I am crazy cat lady. ;)

The calendar itself is nice - photos are crisp and professional-looking. The only thing that I wish was different was the use of quotes for each day - you see cat-related quotes on some days, but more often than not you have silly remarks from the publisher on the pictures... for example:"An indoor dreamer imagines what the day holds in store.""The muse takes a moment to consider the finished masterpiece.""You never know what you might learn from a peek inside someone's shoe."Seriously... I'd rather have cat-related quotes or nothing than have these sorts of trite comments.

I got the 2016 version as a gift and LOVE it. Now I bought 3 more for 2017, make great gifts for my cat loving family! The pics are stunning and they make me laugh and smile everyday. I love the daily ritual of seeing the new Cat of the Day.

I've been getting the Workman Publishing Page-A-Day Gallery calendar of cats for several years. They always have high quality photography, even if the captions are sometimes a little inane. ;)Bonus: After the year is over, you have a LOT of kitty photos for craft projects -- either you or the kids!

I like that the pictures used aren't typical "cute cat pictures", but weird shots of cats. For example, we'll get like a close up of a cat's butt, or a pissed off looking cat under a chair. I will add that Saturdays and Sundays are on one page.

Purrrfect. Have one for current year and love the quality of the photos - from artistic photographs to the thick card stock. Ordered next year's because I know I'd miss seeing my daily cat picture once the current year is over.

I've bought this for several years and have never been disappointed. How do they get the cats to pose like that? Must be a mystery.

this is a quote from the back cover: "The original book, published in 1902, contained more than thirty of Kipling's own brilliant illustrations, all of which have been faithfully reproduced in this Aziloth Books edition." "BRILLIANT" and "FAITHFULLY REPRODUCED" IS TOTALLY INACCURATE. The book itself is not large and the inside illustrations are ALL BLACK AND WHITE and SO RIDICULOUSLY SMALL that the reproductive quality is non-existant. The stories and poems are fine. I am SOOOOO DISAPPOINTED when the ILLUSTRATIONS, just as delightful as Kilings writings are impossible to enjoy..even the larger ones are reproduced so badly, fuzzy B&W lines. Some are as small as <1/2" by <1/1/2 " !!!

This book was released July 1, 2018 and I pre-ordered without reviews as none were available. I was surprised to find 2700 reviews on this book right after Amazon received it in mid-July, 2018. My review is for "this specific book." Amazon has generic reviews listed for this book of all the Rudyard Kipling "Jungle Books" they sell, so we customers do not know what reviews applies to what books. Amazon did this also with Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories many books Amazon sells. Not acceptable! This specific book, released July 1, 2018, is abridged with illustrations that can help a child understand how a boy could grow up with animals in the wild. Well written story. Definitely for ages 5 and up. I will give it to my grandson, but feel I cannot give it to my granddaughters because it has various illustrations of boy nudity from the back. 1 picture of bare butt would have been enough; the other illustrations could have had foliage discreetly hiding the nudity.

“Just So Stories” is a collection of 12 children’s stories. The theme that runs through the dozen stories is that they are mostly tall-tale answers for questions that children might have. All but two of them focus on animals and nature, and the two divergent stories deal with the origin of written language. Since it’s such a small collection and the titles tend to synopsize the stories, I’ll include the table of contents below, which may give one greater insight into the nature of the stories.1.) How the Whale Got his Throat2.) How the Camel Got his Hump3.) How the Rhinoceros Got his Skin4.) How the Leopard Got his Spots5.) The Elephant’s Child6.) The Sing-Song of Old Man Kangaroo7.) Given the genre, I imagine most editions have some kind of pictures, but your edition’s graphics may vary. A number of the stories include short poetry—usually at the end. The poetry is part of the original Kipling product and so are likely included in all unabridged editions.I’d recommend this book for those looking for short stories that are relatable to young children.

I first encountered this story as a child, as an animated film on television. It became my favorite story, with the cadence of the narration and the wonderful animation bringing the story to life. I used to watch it every year, just like the Christmas specials and The Wizard of Oz. I've even seen it a few times as an adult, each time reliving a little piece of my childhood.When I saw this book recently, on a list of free books, I grabbed it up so I could carry this little piece around with me all the time. I was kind of afraid to actually read the story, because so often these days books and their movies don't have much in common. However, this is word for word the animated story I have enjoyed so many times; or should I say the animated film is just like the book. The language is lyrical, and there is a rhythm to the story that reinforces this quality. If I had a child, since they don't show the film any more, this would be a regular on the bedtime story list, and not just for the language. The themes of making the best of what happens to you in life, and of protecting your family, are woven throughout this story, as well as using common sense when planning anything you have to do. I'm going to grab The Jungle Book next!

This is a beautiful copy of Just So Stories. As others have mentioned, it is a small volume but the cover is embossed and the pages are gilded. The paper is thin--not due to cheapness but rather it is fine paper. It contains the original illustrations and their captions, and it is just lovely.I ordered this copy because I was unable to find the copy my grandfather had given me as a child, which was a rather sizeable volume complete with colored illustrations on glossy paper. This copy is nothing like that volume, which held up well to the repeated use of a young child. This volume is meant for the caring, gentle hands of an older child or adult. If your child cannot use tissue paper without tearing it, this is not the volume for him or her.That said, if your child loves the stories, this would be a wonderful book to give him or her when she or he grows up.

Kipling wrote for a more leisurely age. The stories make use of a wide vocabulary and literary devices such as repetition and alliteration. It is hard for a modern child to fully understand. But there is something going on at a deeper level. They love the rhythm of Kipling. The story lines are exquisitely crafted. They like to ask questions about the vocabulary. They are fascinated with the subjects of the stories. You can read the story as written, then retell it often in your own words. For instance, I told my son the story of the insatiably curious elephant child this week when he was pestering me with questions. Then pretended to pull his nose.Also at a deep level, Kipling teaches traditional values and shares deep wisdom. The females in his stories (First Woman in The cat who walked alone, the Tailor Bird's wife in Rikki Tiki Tavi) are fully drawn and quite intelligent.It is a classic.

Once again, Rick Joyner releases the best Christian book of the year. If you only read one book this year, make it this one. Just as good as the Final Quest series, and this new series continues the saga, and fills in the holes along Rick’s unique journey with God. I will read this one again.

The book itself is written on a third grade level. (The educational publishing company should have been a red flag.) If you are purchasing this for a die hard fan that is looking for an actual biography, look elsewhere. It reads like an elementary school book report. The front cover looked like the plastic coating was bubbled and peeling. There was also a noticeable scratch as well. The book was slightly bent as it was shipped in an envelope. The package itself was not damaged.
