Saving Talk Therapy: How Health Insurers, Big Pharma, and Slanted Science are Ruining Good Mental Health Care, by Enrico Gnaulati

Review

“Saving Talk Therapy is a compelling, meticulously researched, and accessible account of how the machinations of two very powerful industries—health insurers and pharmaceutical companies—have undermined the viability of the practice of talk therapy and corrupted the research paradigms in use to evaluate the effects of all mental health treatments. Moving beyond critique, Gnaulati provides clinical vignettes from his own practice to illustrate what is beneficial about psychodynamic/humanistic psychotherapy. For the millions of mental health patients who are dissatisfied with the dehumanized treatments they have received, and for the thousands of young mental health professionals who know the work they are doing feels much less rewarding than they had thought it would be, this is the book to read.”—Ronald B. Miller, professor of psychology, St. Michael’s College, and author of Not So Abnormal Psychology: A Pragmatic View of Mental Illness“In this remarkable and highly readable book, Dr. Enrico Gnaulati, an eminent author and seasoned clinical psychologist, provides a compelling and spirited argument for the value of psychotherapy for individuals and for society. Drawing upon a wide range of research, he also does the public and mental health professions a great service by questioning the often extravagant claims made for the effectiveness and safety of psychiatric medication, and the overstated benefits of quick-fix therapies.”—Steen Halling, professor of psychology emeritus, Seattle University, and author of Intimacy, Transcendence, and Psychology: Closeness and Openness in Everyday Life“Saving Talk Therapy is an impassioned defense of the emotionally evocative form of psychotherapy that many people still seek. It is now vanishing. Dr. Gnaulati brilliantly lays out the history of the field and provides incisive analysis of the forces—political, economic, and cultural—that have endangered its future. This is a compelling and essential read for mental health professionals and consumers alike.”—Ben Gorvine, assistant chair, Department of Psychology, Northwestern University“Saving Talk Therapy is a brilliant exposé of what has happened to the field of psychotherapy and should be required reading for therapists and patients alike. Both authoritative and engaging, Dr. Gnaulati masterfully lays bare the deceits and disinformation that prevent most people from ever getting meaningful therapy and most therapists from learning how to provide it.”—Jonathan Shedler, PhD, Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry, University of Colorado School of Medicine and author of The Efficacy of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy

This is a wonderful book, written by a thoughtful and insightful psychotherapist.I am a psychologist and psychotherapist, I identify as primarily humanistic and secondarily psychodynamic, and agree with the majority of the author's thoughts and conclusions. It is really difficult to find psychotherapists who practice real talk therapy, related to a variety of factors that the author outlines.Because I agree so much with what the author has presented, I will focus on some areas I feel he neglected, or was not up to date. The author criticizes the current overfocus on CBT and short, structured treatments. Working at the VA, however, I have observed that a large minority of patients actually improve significantly with these treatments. When they do improve, they note that they have learned coping skills that help them feel in control of their symptoms, whereas before their symptoms were uncontrollable. Also, some patients want to work in a brief and problem-solving manner, they don't want, or need, extended psychotherapy, although this could be helpful in areas beyond symptom management. So, CBT is very useful for some patients.Which brings me to the central issue the author missed, in my opinion. Psychological treatment is beginning to fragment into 1) treatment of diagnosable mental disorders, which is short term and structured and paid for by insurance companies, and 2) psychotherapy for the sorts of issues described by the author, the problems of living, sometimes severe, that all of us have, to a greater or lesser extent, including crises that precipitate a desire to enter psychotherapy. The author is advocating #2, as am I. And much of #1 can be treated in the second matter, and often more profoundly and definitively. However, this longer, less structured, open ended psychotherapy is no longer being paid for by insurance companies, and unfortunately, organized psychology has colluded in it's demise with the overfocus on diagnosable mental disorders treated in short term, structured, time-limited therapy, the so called "evidence based treatments."So we are talking apples and oranges and I see no way that this is going to change. It is heartbreaking. I see it every day at the VA. Patients who need longer term care, including for ptsd, and are terminated from treatment because they have reached "maximum treatment benefit" (i.e., a certain number of sessions). Fortunately, I work in a spinal cord injury center and these same constraints are not placed on my work, but I am very aware of what is going around me and how a large number of veterans (and in the non-VA world, regular citizens) have no access to the help that they really need - unless they have significant financial resources. In my mind, then, talk therapy is dying, and there is no stopping it, just as psychodynamic therapy has been replaced by cognitive-behavioral therapy. Perhaps there will be a small number of psychotherapists from various disciplines who will be able to make a go of being talk therapists, but this will not be the norm. It is incredibly sad to me, knowing how transformative 'real" psychotherapy can be.

Having been in practice over 40 years, I was very pleased to read Enrico's reminder of the importance of the humanistic and depth approaches to the practice of psychotherapy. In the future, (which is rapidly approaching) an informed culture will demand that this type of therapy be the "standard" for truly helping our patients and the society as a whole. This is, and should be, a must-read for mental health professionals and patients alike. One cannot overstate the usefulness of active engagement, authenticity and the judicious use of humor in helping people.

Gnaulati has written a valuable account of how talk therapy has been methodically misrepresented as not supported by research and set aside for short-term, manualized therapies that don't actually live up to their "evidence-based" claims. He explains clearly the research conundrum, the forces that prefer to push talk therapy to the periphery, and describes the evidence for these therapies of depth and relationship. An important book that's a wakeup call about a mental health system crisis that is growing in the U.S.

As a practicing psychiatrist, I trained in providing various forms of supportive and insight-oriented therapy. Each of my training sessions with patients was an hour long and I quickly learned what this author also learned through his experience - simply providing medication doesn't work well, and patients often seek more feedback than simple reflection of their own statements. Therapy is very much a two way street. The author describes what has happened, and what has gone wrong, with a system driven by research - research which can't do a very good job over a years-long therapeutic alliance to determine the benefits of such an alliance. Unfortunately, we're now stuck in that system and the only way out for those of us in the field is to have our own private practice and to charge fees directly of the patient, bypassing insurance in the process entirely. That works, but it also means that a good proportion of the public can't afford the care that would actually result in lowering of their overall demand on the healthcare system. If only the legislators would read this text, perhaps we'd all have a chance.

From Publishers Weekly

Readers familiar with Fraser's work in Gourmet, O the Oprah Magazine, More, and other publications may recognize the author's efforts at self-improvement, attempts at finding love, or meals she's had in places like Lima, Peru: "We try ceviche of wild sea bass with lime and red onions... we have spicy chifa food in a downtown Chinese restaurant... we stuff ourselves with stuffed peppers..." In following up An Italian Affair, Fraser takes a closer look at her own wanderlust and examines the positive and negative effects it has had on her life, particularly over the past 10 years. For example, the author finds a glorious waterfall in Samoa. "The water is so clear light blue it's possible to see all the way to the bottom, and the bottom is a long way down. I dive in for a swim... this is why I love to travel." But she questions the notion of having it all, or having it all at once, and worries that her desire to explore and her professional success have come at the expense of stability and family. She challenges the ideals of happiness and home she had previously held, adding a layer of depth to a memoir that will excite travelers of the world and the armchair alike. From Booklist

Travel writer Fraser enchanted readers with her tale of her postdivorce romance with a sophisticated French professor in An Italian Affair (2001). She continues the story here, beginning with the end of the affair after the professor finds someone he wants to settle down with. Fraser wants the same thing, but she still finds herself most drawn to free-spirited men looking for flings, not relationships. An assault in Samoa leaves her shaken—and afraid to travel alone. Fraser turns her focus inward, trying to find peace through meditation and to temper her impulsiveness. Her forty-fifth birthday brings the end of a relationship and the beginning of something new when Fraser travels to the Mexican city of San Miguel de Allende and finds herself contemplating buying a house. The title is an apt description of both Fraser’s travels—which include jaunts to Italy, Provence, and Rwanda described in evocative, lush prose—and her frame of mind over the course of the eight years that her winning coming-of-middle-age memoir spans. --Kristine Huntley

This is truly an enchanting book and will take you to a place outside of the world you normally livei n. There's something relatable, yet not, about this incredible book. It's truly a coming of age story that hits close to home. I loved this book and thought it had everything you needed in ones life - at least as a strong independent woman with a free spirit. This book definitely was a kindred spirit for me. The authors writing makes you forget you are reading a book, it's hard to put down.

I always enjoy Laura's writing. She comes across as warm and personable. I did get tired of her complaints about being 40! She is healthy and energetic. A lot of people never even get there! I thought the forties were sexy and fabulous. I'd love to be 40 again! If she wanted to start a family she could have been more selective in her choices of men. She could always adopt, people have adopted in their 60's. Still I admire her honesty and adventurous spirit.

I got this as a Kindle deal in December, and really enjoyed it. I marveled at how much of the world this woman got to see as a freelance writer living in San Francisco. Certainly something to congratulate her on. I enjoyed the travel writing and the personal ruminations. Some people think she came of as whiny. She didn't. She just wore her thinking cap throughout and talked about her weaknesses candidly. The important thing is that she grows as a person, and illuminates the challenges and rewards of her journey for us. A nice memoir, well written.

I gave this book 3 stars because I think future readers should not choose this book in anticipation of another "An Italian Affair". I did and I was quite disappointed after reading the first few chapters or so. Unlike her previous book, miss Fraser almost focused entirely on her own internal struggle, her race against her own clock, her effort to overcome her midlife crisis, wherever she visited, and thus in my opinion failed to capture the readers' interest with her travel. I found myself racing through the pages many times to fast forward to her next trip.On the other hand, this book was quite easy to read. It was honest, unpretentious, and quite revealing. In fact, it may be a bit too honest and revealing for a male reader such as myself. (Perhaps the female readers would think otherwise.) However, I must say that her writing in this book is much more eloquent and profound comparing to "An Italian Affair".To borrow Lillian Hellman's words, I think miss Fraser "left too much of [her] unfinished because [she] wasted too much time" looking for someone to make her life complete. The last chapter however was very poignant and in my personal opinion brought some closure to miss Fraser. At least that was how I felt at the end.I finished reading "All Over The Map" despite many times I wondered if I had chosen the wrong book. In the end, I did like the book for what it was. It just was not what I had looked for in the beginning.

I guess if you are a middle aged woman struggling with being middle aged this book could be amusing. The author does share some good humor.

This book stands well on it's own as a travel / memoir but it is best read and understood once you've read Fraser's "An Italian Affair" because the Professor is still the most compelling human character.

I read this book right after I finished "An Italian Affair" (which I also loved). I really enjoy traveling but I don't usually like travel books. This book is the perfect combination of a good romantic, adventurous, and informative story wrapped up in one. It also is a very honest look at a woman's life....whether you are single, married, with or without kids, I think everyone can find something that will touch them. I came away from it thinking that there is no perfect answer to anyones lives. We must all live our lives the way that fits best. Things can change along the way and as long as you are willing to go with those changes and not try to stick to what your original plan was, you'll have an interesting life. Laura Fraser has had one interesting life that I am grateful to have been able to experience through her book.

I love that this book is about a person who doesn't weigh her happiness on the Prada handbag scale. I wish I had a Prada handbag...It is refreshing to read a book about a strong, single woman in search of herself and the rest of the world. I thought that this book was funny, witty, touching and made me want to book my next vacation... which I then did.

I, like most Americans, am obsessed with "celebrity". I read the entertainment magazines to see pictures of the elusive star, both shopping at the market and on the red carpet. Vial captures these men in one of the most intimate places; our bedroom, a place reserved only for lovers and the men's children. The men, some unrecognizable by myself, range the gamut. From the uber-intimate (James Franco sitting on the toilet), the comical (Dermot Mulroney cradling a snarling dog) and the sweet (Ethan Embry holding a baby). From their gestures, environments and faces, we hopefully get a better sense of who these men are when the cameras aren't rolling. Their actions are what our men do every day, in this book they're "just another guy." And that's the genius behind Vial's idea; photographing well-known people (who most of us will never meet) doing the things we do; therefore establishing a connection between the every-man and the superstar. This book is suited for anyone interested in Hollywood culture.

No matter what celebrity drew you to this listing, you should know that this book is well worth having. Any star photographer can assemble a collection of famous people, but only Veronique Vial can bring you something quite like this. What you see, as you look at these images, are people so completely at ease with her -- and the camera's -- presence that they've let their guards down and revealed their most basic, human selves to her, to her camera, and to us. These are the stars before they put their public masks on, and Veronique treats them with enormous respect and kindness, while treating her audience to something we otherwise can never have: an intimate, private moment with our favorite public figures.

I found quite a few images very interesting. This is not your usual male art book. But I do Think it is worth having !

When this book came out about 8 years ago, I was immediately enamored. It's amazing, because even relatively unattractive men are captured in a very flattering light. And the attractive men are captured in a VERY VERY flattering light. This book is so much more interesting than what I remember. Please note: this photo collection will not be of any interest to people who are not interested in looking at pictures of (sometimes half-nude) men.

This book isn't worth the money. The only one in it that looks great is Vin Diesel. The rest of the men, well what can you say. I wish that I had not bought the book. I was sadly dissapointed with it.

not as interesting as the women version.

The book arrived in horrific shape - the binder was torn from the pages and many of the pages were stained with a white crusty substance.I was INCREDIBLY disappointed.

Ah. I really know nothing of photography but most of these pictures are at least *ahem* nice to look at. I would have preferred a little blurb from author regarding the taking of every picture (sometimes there is an explanation of a picture, but mostly not), and even more so HOW exactly she got permission from all these men to take pictures of them in bed, in front of the mirror, at breakfast, in the shower, on the toilet (can you imagine though? "Hey let me come to your house and take pictures of you when you probably look your worst, it's for a book. Come on, it'll be awesome."). But yeah, really the thing I find most interesting is finding pictures of actors I now know as fairly famous before it was common to know their name (there's a picture of Adam Scott in here and despite watching Parks and Rec on a regular basis I didn't even recognize him).

A fantastic and hilarious read with a great storyline and awesome characters that will have you laughing like crazy one moment, raging mad another time, frustrated, sad and a bit piqued at everyone and then all mellow and brimming with hope and happiness. Their sexcapades are raw and explicit, especially when it happens when you least expect it due to location and proximity to others........ Shameful I tell you but equally amazing and quite the turn on. I love how in touch they are with their feelings but not how evasive they are with each other about the things that really matters.Walker is going through a few family issues that are eating away at him and he is not able to speak to anyone about it. Then he got a called that literally turn his world upside down even more and to get away from all the stress and turmoil happening in his life, he hooked up with Iris, a girl he met at a party. They both went into their night of debauchery with the intent of it being a 'hook up', but then they woke up craving more of each other but not necessarily wanting to put too much of a label on their time together. But because of secrets and a bit of insecurity on Iris's part, things of importance she should have told Walker about was revealed by someone else and that secret was detrimental to their budding relationship. Can they see their way past the secrets and back to each other?

Walker and Iris' story is a compelling read. I didn't want to put it down or for it to end. Crystal has a way to draw her readers in. The characters, lead or secondary even background have depth to bring them to life. With each line, turn of the page, and chapter I was enraptured. I became invested in the outcome of the story as if these are real people. Because this story tackles very real issues people deal with. The ending was perfect and I can't wait for the next in the series.

This Inked Heart series is definitely on its way to becoming a favorite for me. The guys are smoking, tempting and brooding and everything that makes a girl melt. We met Walker in Brendon’s story Tempting and I’ve been patiently waiting for more. Now we have Walker’s story and of course it’s HOT! I mean Crystal Kaswell definitely knows her way around a good bad boy. Walker is plain old filthy deliciousness. Iris and his story sucks you in completely until the very end where you’re left begging for more! With the bombshell dropped like the one in this story I CANNOT wait for more Inked Hearts and I hope the wait isn’t too long!

I really liked it. I loved the incredible chemistry between Walker & Iris that only seemed to get better as time went on. They were supposed to be in a FWB relationship but it seemed early on that Walker spent every available moment he could with Iris even though he refused to admit there was more between them. It difficult to understand his behavior after finding Iris’s secret but only because he he’d told her he didn’t care about the past which obviously wasn’t true. But it was great to see that even though he struggled with her past he couldn’t be without her.

It was supposed to be casual ... What began as a one night stand for Walker and Lily turns into so much more. No strings, no need to know each other's pasts, just two consenting adults having fun. The past doesn't stay in the past though for Lily. As Walker deals with his sister's addictions, Lily's past comes into play. Lily fears that Walker may not be able to forgive her past mistakes when he is not able to forgive his sister's.

I received this for an honest review....OMG I fell in love with these two Walker and Iris were absolutely amazing together and I love every minute of this book!!!!I knew when I was reading Tempting that I WANTED Walkers story and I am so glad I got itThis author is beccoming of my most favorite authors!!!LOVED this series so far and cant wait to see what comes next

This is the second story in the Inked Heart series but can be read as a standalone. The first book is called Tempting. I loved Walker and Iris's story. What starts out as f- buddies and turns out to something more as time goes by. Loved the storyline and the characters. The couple from the first story are mentioned but you don't need to read it first but it had me intrigued so I will have to read that one. When these two are together the chemistry is explosive. This story has hot and heavy sex with a sexy dirty talker, Heartbreak, family drama and love. Need to read Brendon's story and can't wait to read Ryan's story.I received an ARC and volunteered to leave a review. As of right now 1/4 you can get it for $.99 and it comes with the first book in the series Tempting and Sing Your Heart Out.

So far I have enjoyed all of the books that I have read by Crystal Kaswell. They are usually light and sexy with good character development. I really liked Walker and Iris, but in this story they are both dealing with some dark deep issues which many face today. The issue of addiction is not handled lightly in the story, the issues that come along with it such as family and work issues are addressed. The story held me captive from the beginning until the end.

#4,274 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I found this book boring up until about 75% of the way through, and the characterization inconsistent. I bought this book because the first one, which I enjoyed, ended on a cliffhanger, and I wanted to know what happened next. Unlike the first book, which focuses on the developing relationship between the two main characters, this book is more focused on war, and there aren't many scenes between the two. They jump into a serious relationship, but they seem to barely see or talk to each other. The heroine is suddenly obsessed with pacifism, and often thinks and acts in a silly way, which was not the case in the first book. It was frustrating to me, and made me wonder if I misunderstood her character before. The training for war and worrying about the outcome drags on and on. After the worst happens, the book finally becomes interesting. The resolution was good enough to redeem the story for me, and I do plan to read others set in this world in the future.

While I didn't think the first book was the best book ever, I did like it well enough. The story being told made me want to continue on to this, the next and final book in the series relating to Sorcha and Eamonn. The book opens with a very short story of a rose that falls in love with a stag, which is meant to be a sort of metaphor for Sorcha and Eamonn. It was honestly a lovely story and I really enjoyed it...then the true story begins and everything takes a dive.Sorcha's personality takes a drastic and very negative turn. The entire point of the first novel was Sorcha wished so desperately to save her family she would even make a deal with a fae. Yet now that she's returned to the family she supposedly loves, all she does is feel sorry for herself. For the first quarter of the book Sorcha is whiny and endlessly complains of the "lesser" circumstances she lives in and how she belongs in the fae world because she's apparently too good for the human world now. She also feels no sympathy for her suffering family any longer and sees caring for them as an annoying burden. Most of what I have to say contains major spoilers so I'll have to skip over all that and just say this whole book was just a very frustrating read to me. It was still well-written and there were moments that I really liked, such as the interesting dwarf named Cait and the sadly minimal scenes with Bran, but all the main characters just did noting but make me feel annoyed, aggravated, or disappointed in their lack of growth. It's hard to like a book when your protagonist and your love interest are not characters you enjoy reading about.

Oh man I am at an utter loss for words. This book was beyond amazing!!! I absolutely fell in love with book one but this one has My heart soaring, then shattering and then piecing itself back together in the most perfect way. Book one ended with Sorcha being taken back to Ul Neil as Eammon is being attacked by his brother on Hy-brasil and omg what feeling that had me working through.Book two jumps right back in after a bit of time has passed and so many things have occured! I don't want to give any spoilers away but holy smokes what a journey these souls have to go through. The characters grew so much. Pain led to bitterness and impulsivity then became and grew through to much more. I love love loooove all the characters ( except for the obvious) in this series. The side characters offer so much to the story and help guide and support Sorcha and Eammon in so many ways. We are introduced to so many more characters and questions from book one are answered and expanded on so much more than I thought they would be.There are a few questions I'm left with but I'm hoping that the next series (wink wink) will answer some of it.Honestly I cannot say enough how amazed I am at this book. This book has made me pity the wicked from book one and ugh I just wanted to hate them. Such a brilliant take on the Seelie and Unseelie and lesser fae and how it all came together.

What can I say. This book wildly exceeded my expectations. Not only did it expand on Heart of the Fae by showing us more of the Otherworld and SO MUCH character development but it was also a heartwarming reminder of love and kindness and all that is good in this world.Beauty and the Beast has always been my favorite fairytale so I was quick to pick up Heart of the Fae as it is a wonderful retelling of the original story. I loved its sequel Veins of Magic so much! Eamonn and Sorcha developed so much in this story and I felt the build up to the ending was perfect. Sorcha has become such a strong character and a fantastic warrior while still maintaining her desire to heal and help others. Eamonn has learned to not only trust and love those around him but also himself which I feel is a far cry from where he started in Heart of the Fae.I also loved the world building in Veins of Magic. In Heart of the Fae we were limited to mostly Hy-brasil but in Veins of Magic we got to actually see so much of the Otherworld! Good world building and character developments are two of the most important things to me in a good story. And that's what this duology accomplished.I cannot wait to see what Emma comes up with next!

Truth and Method is one of the most important works of philosophy of the 20th century, and this revised translation by Weinsheimer and Marshall is the authoritative translation. I give both the work and the translation a 5+ star rating. This edition, however, has mistakes all over the place; they obviously scanned the pages of the Continuum edition and did little to no proof reading. (For example, key German terms are misspelled.) The font is also horrible and the line spacing is weird; and there are no margins to write in. Spend the money and buy the Continuum edition.

This is one of those great moments where a great student follows his master (Heidegger) yet gives us a new product and not simply a repetition of his master. In short, for Gadamer language is the horizon of being. As Kant was wrong to seek a thing-in-itself, so we also should beware of a "meaning-in-itself."Gadamer begins and ends his work on a strange note: the aesthetics and interpretation of art. It’s not that art determines how we interpret text, but art allows Gadamer to illustrate (no pun intended) the tension given that great works of art are considered “timeless,” yet they were produced in historical, finite circumstances. This tension points to the horizon, a key Gadamerian term.Every experience has implicit horizons of before and after and finally fuses with the continuum of experiences present in the before and after to form a unified flow of experience (246). Df. horizon = not a rigid boundary but something that moves with and invites one to advance further. Everything that is given as existent is given in terms of a world and hence brings the world horizon with it. As a horizon phenomenon “world” is essentially related to subjectivity, and this relation means also that it exists in transciency.”Hermeneutical circle: possesses an ontological positive significance. We have already fore-projected before we even approach the text. This creates an openness which situates our meaning with other meanings. Understanding is a participation in the event of tradition and not so much a subjective act (302).Horizons are temporally-conditioned. Time is not a gulf to be crossed by a supportive ground in which the present is rooted. We cannot stand outside of our situation. “All self-knowledge arises from what is historically pre-given, what Hegel calls “substance’” (313). Horizon: every finite present has its limitations. Every situation represents a standpoint that limits the possibility of vision. Horizons move with us. When we understand something, we fuse the horizons between text and interpreter. Fusion of horizons: We regain concepts of a historical past in such a way that it also includes our own comprehension of them (382).This will go down as one of those truly great books. Ground-breaking works. It’s not super-hard to read simply because it is well-written. However, he does presuppose a good bit of Hegel and Heidegger, so keep that in mind.A note about the reprint: I have the Bloomsbury edition and the text is fine. SHucks, I even got mine used. Yes, the spine willl crease when you read it, but that's true of most books. The spine, though, will not break.

Gadamer's Truth and Method is a long, dense, and richly informative effort to find a solid and rational basis for understanding in the human sciences or Geistenwissenschaften. Gadamer proceeds from the observation that efforts to adapt experimental methods used in the natural sciences, as well as sophisticated statistical models employed with less success but with just as much commitment to rigor in economics and related disciplines are, by their very nature, ill-suited to his objective. Gadamer is, of course, correct, though he puts himself in a position that die-hard proponents of quantitative techniques and the mathematical expression of lawfulness judge to be hopelessly problematic. Nevertheless, Gadamer persists. Whether or not he succeeds is inevitably a judgment call, but I'm inclined to view his efforts as fruitful, providing a persuasive methodological foundation for research in disciplines wherein well-informed interpretation necessarily takes the place of model building and testing.Gadamer's book, first published in 1960, represents a lifetime of scholarship, covering western philosophy from the ancient Greeks to the time of Truth and Method's publication. Gadamer's mastery of material pertinent to his task has rightly been characterized as encyclopedic, but it is also suitably focused, especially through application of the hermeneutic method, broadly speaking. With regard to questions such as what does it mean to be a thinking, feeling human being who actively interprets and contributes to creating the circumstances that give life meaning, Gadamer proposes that we seek a thorough understanding of the tradition of which we, as socially created entities, are manifestations.Without trivializing Gadamer's conclusions or misinterpreting their methodological and substantive import, it seems reasonable to conclude that he is referring to a process that is conspicuous in the social sciences, especially as understood by ethnographers, namely socialization in linguistically rich environments. Each of us is born and raised in an historically specific time and place that can reasonably be construed as having an interpretable shared culture, an ensemble of prescriptions, prohibitions, commonplace explanations, ways of making inferences, and modes of understanding to which consociates refer in making sense of what it means to be. Emile Durkheim's concept of the collective conscience and George Herbert Mead's generalized other are products of socialization into a specific socio-cultural milieu and can be construed as closely approximating tradition as Gadamer understands that idea. In a more critical vein, a similar claim can be made for Antonio Gramsci's concept of cultural hegemony. Thus, in Gadamer's view, "history does not belong to us; we belong to it. Long before we understand ourselves through the process of self-examination, we understand ourselves in a self-evident way in the family, society, and state in which we live" (Gadamer, 1998: 276). The language we use in understanding ourselves, moreover, in not merely a tool that we use, language is constitutive of being human.Research with reference to an identifiable tradition, a specific collective consciousness or generalized other is best done interpretatively, through application of historical methods or qualitative anthropological techniques to achieve hermeneutic understanding of the varying conditions of life as they are experienced and understood by concrete human beings. Given this orientation to making sense of one's place in the world, growing interest in historical and, especially, ethnographic applications and the consequences of their use has produced a good deal of contemporary interest in Gadamer's work and in hermeneutics generally.Gadamer has been challenged by Habermas and others as being insufficiently specific as to the meaning of tradition. In this critical view, complex modern societies are not characterized by one stable and homogeneous tradition shared by all. Instead, divisions such as class, race, ethnicity, native tongue, and religion assure a multiplicity of different and changing traditions for any time and place. While there is merit to this critique, I think it is often overdrawn, ignoring the fact that Gadamer's approach is readily applicable to co-existing but varied socio-cultural configurations for any time and place. Were we to completely discount Gadamer's approach for the reasons given by Habermas, we would also be obliged be reject Max Weber's use of ideal-typical analysis of social systems; an unlikely event, indeed.Truth and Method requires a substantial commitment of time and effort, and Gadamer devotes a lot of attention to failed alternatives to his hermeneutic approach to establishing truth in the human sciences. In short, he does not cut to the chase but gives a history of the varied philosophical routes that others have tried over the course of millenia to find a compelling methodological basis for achieving understanding in the human sciences. Nevertheless, the richness of the material makes reading it and thinking about it worthwhile. However, those of us who lack a strong background in philosophy will gain less than better informed readers.

The book itself is terrible quality. It's required reading for one of my classes, and many of my classmates' books are falling apart. Mine has fallen apart into three separate pieces. Not recommended if you plan to write in the book (although practically impossible in such small margins). The text can be pretty dry (and there's nothing wrong with that) but it's as if the font tries to beg that it's not, and that's a little conflicting when trying to read it.

This version has many, many typos. It looks like it was never proofed. Just get the other version...this one is not the best. Plus, the font makes you want to gouge your eyes out.
