Very good play about gender roles and society pressures. You have symbolism and death and rape all in one but elegantly discussed and dramatized

Maria Irene Fornes, Fefu and Her Friends (PAJ Publications, 1978)Okay, I will admit it right up front: I have absolutely no idea what is going on in the last act of this play, and I have done absolutely no digging on the web in order to uncover any random "what does this mean?" threads that might be hanging around. I simply let it wash over me and took it based on its merits as a written document. I should probably go looking at some point, because I liked it enough anyway to give it a strong recommend even without knowing what's going on. The characters are crisp, the dialogue zingy, the action surprisingly playful given the overall dark tone here. I don't think this is one you need to "get" in order to enjoy. Take it the same way I did--just admire it for what it is, which seems to be "obtuse". *** ½(For the record, after I finished writing this, I did google it, and it seems my incomprehension was not nearly as rare as I thought it was.)

Canon Francis Ripley, also known as Francis Joseph Ripley, was an English priest born in 1912 at Lancashire. He became a Jesuit novitiate in London after graduating from a local Catholic grammar school with honors. After being convinced that his vocation was not with this order, he was ordained in 1939 following his studies at the archdiocesan seminary of Upholland. Father Ripley is the author of Terrible as an Army, The Diary of a Small Town Priest, Souls at Stake (with Frank Duff), Letters to Muriel, and This Is the Faith. Canon Ripley's book is a helpful explanation of many tenets of the Catholic faith, written for a mid-20th Century audience. He is faithful to the Magisterium of the Church and effectively draws out the essential implications of the catechism in a way that is relevant for a contemporary audience. As I recall, the chapters on the Sacrament of Marriage were particularly good.The real problem with this book, however, is that the editor has chosen to modify the original text in some decidedly obnoxious ways. First is the policy of highlighting (in bold type) portions of the text that the editor considers especially important. That is properly the job of the reader, armed with a pen or pencil of his own. This is an unfortunate decision that can skew one's reading of the text.Second, the text has been updated to reflect the current disciplinary practices of the Church. This should have been relegated to footnotes (or, at the very least, the older disciplines should have been mentioned in the notes!).Finally, and most irritatingly, the editor acknowledges that Canon Ripley's section on the Social Doctrine of the Church has been almost entirely re-written. Apparently, the original section, written about 1950, advocated substantial state ownership of some large industries. Because the editor didn't think this applied anymore, he replaced it with his own interpretation of Catholic Social Teaching. The editor is certainly entitled to his own view, but he should have allowed Canon Ripley to speak for himself. This choice in particular lacks integrity.I'm torn between giving this book 3 or 4 stars. The information in the book is excellent, but I was so distracted by the poor editing that it nearly ruined it for me. If only I could locate Canon Ripley's "original" text.

If you want a straight-up, orthodox, unshrinking explanation of Catholicism, look no further. Canon Ripley was a street-corner evangelist for the Catholic faith (sometimes literally), as well as an expert in dogmatic theology, and it's clear that he never backed down from an argument.The work is a bit old-fashioned, but that never did anybody any harm, in fact it is a good thing to read older works for perspective and balance. Fortunately when the editors interject commentary, they keep it plainly separate from the original text. (They are not nearly as good at this job as Canon Ripley was!)Too often modern apologetics tends to soft-pedal controversial matters in order to try to 'keep the peace'. But He came not to bring peace, but a sword.Fasten your seatbelt, and read with an open mind.

There seems to be a growing body of Roman Catholic apologetic literature out there. Some of it is better than others. None, in my reading, quite matches the wide range of questions or provides a more thorough treatment of any one of them than this classic work (originally published in 1951). Chapters are provided for virtually every topic questioned by non-Catholics about the faith - Mary, the Saints, the Pope, and so on. Each topic is discussed with great depth and careful exegesis of scripture in support. The size of the book may intimidate casual searchers but it is ideal for the more demanding challenger.Due to the arrangement of chapters by topic, they can easily be read out of sequence to follow a specific interest or in order to gain a solid base of understanding. You will want a copy to keep as a reference to the specific topics.There are two very helpful Appendixes included with the work. The first is a brief timeline of the history of the church. The second is a summary of major heresies that have challenged the church in that history.Keep your volume close at hand for handy reference in defending the faith and strengthening your own understanding as well. Indeed a classic that continues to age with grace and clarity. Well worth the investment to keep it handy.

I think every Catholic should have this book in their home library. Mine is used a lot. It's the precursor to the US Adult Catechism but is written, in my opinion, in a more understandable form. Have bought several as gifts.

This is a bit like the Baltimore Catechism with inserted deeper exposition of the principles, for adult readers. A really fine exploration of the faith!

This is a big book but it's not overwhelming and it is ideal for people going through RCIA (particularly if your RCIA director is not up to the job) and it's great for people who already are Catholic but were never really taught the catechism or for people who need a refresher course.It's clearly written, decisive and is easy to understand. If I had to hand one single book to a person who was asking about the Church this would be the one.

this is the abridged version, and they took out the jack knife, and the 3rd to last spread is printed upside down which adds to the frustration of this obsession my son has.

Good book of course, but quality of this hardcover is great, more like a board book, and has larger pages. Our toddler has loved it!

My two year old is loving this classic! He wants to read it over and over again. The pages are very thick, durable, and easy to turn.

I love the abridged version. It’s short, sweet, and to the point. The original has its good qualities however, it’s very repetitive and drawn out. With the abridged version, my one year old has the patience to sit through the whole story.

Looking at it any other way would be like trying to have an indian understand Hitler.. There is so much in "church" taught by MENS ideas - or the council of ZZZ or XXX. THe WORD - ALL the WORD and NOTHING BUT THE WORD will always point to TRUTH and THE WAY.

Author Pastor Mark Biltz, founder of El Shaddai Ministries in Washington State is a well-known and popular commentator on the Feasts of the Lord and has produced a series of DVDs on the Feasts that have gone around the world. He knows his subject and does not claim to be anything he is not.Biltz’s contention is that there is no extra bonus prize for being first to identify the real “Antichrist” or when exactly the “end times” will arrive. If fact, if you focus on that you may well miss the Antichrist. Instead, he contends we need to learn to recognize spiritual patterns within history and look for the reoccurrence of events in those patterns, perhaps updated to account for our ‘progress’. If we know the patterns, we’ll know what to look for and we won’t be fooled into either missing the Antichrist or being taken in by his message.His book is broken down into two main parts. The first explores theories, myths, and misconceptions. It provides us with a historical perspective of the title’s two topics. This is where he introduces us to various Hebrew word mistranslations – some very intentional at the time, and this has sent us down the wrong path. One good example is where the translators translated the same Hebrew word as ‘church’ in some cases and ‘assembly’ in other places. There was method to their madness – and not for good. Then Part One goes on to give us, using very thorough descriptions, the Jewish, Islamic, and Christian views of the End Times. While covering the Jewish view, Biltz provides a perspective on, among other things, who exactly will rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem. While describing the Islamic view, he provides an account of the Muslim perspective on Gog and Magog, and much more.He introduces us to and explains well, the history, rationale, danger, and consequences of Replacement Theology (the idea that God has given up on the Jews as His chosen people and replaced them with Christians). And he certainly does not let the Greek Philosophers get away scot-free with respect to their influences on these views. This part of the book is then rounded out with a review of various Antichrist theories. What is amazing is the similarity as well as the differences between the views, and Biltz does a good job of explaining what gives rise to both. Students of scriptural documents and ideologies will find this most interesting.In the second part of his book, entitled ‘Scriptural Keys to the Truth’, Biltz introduces us to Solomon – the king we recognize mainly as the wisest person that ever lived. But the author uncovers Solomon’s dark side presenting him (and with good reason given the evidence he offers) as a ‘type’ of the Lawless One. This section was most enlightening, even to a long-time reader of Scripture like me. Did you know, for example, that Solomon was acting as an arms dealer to Israel’s enemies?From there, he goes on to cover Israel’s Glory Days, focusing on what those times teach us. With that we transition into the importance of the Judaic calendar vs. the Roman one. He describes the various feasts that God wanted us to celebrate and when they were to be celebrated. Biltz also has a sense of humor and points out in one place in the book that our failure to observe the right calendar and allowing certain variations in the dates from year to year, causes us to celebrate Christ’s death before His birth.He zooms in on two very special celebrations – Hanukkah and Purim. Biltz explains the two historically and then relates Hanukkah to the Messiah (using Matthew 24) and Purim to the End Times. A broader perspective of the Feasts is then presented, using the Book of Revelation as the source. He discovers, as will his readers, that the Feasts of the Lord are directly tied to the last book of the Bible and thus to the unfolding of end times events.The whole point being we would do well to look for the pattern in the timing of the Feasts and how they would apply in the End Times.One learns much from the book and many questions are raised which challenge the reader. For example, is it possible that the Antichrist may be AI (Artificial Intelligence)? Could there be two Messiahs as the Jews believe? Will two different Jesus figures arrive at the end times – the real Jesus and the fake Jesus, as the Muslims believe? Do the Jews believe the Messiah they are awaiting will be divine?Biltz maintains we need to be studying the modus operandi of the Antichrist more than we need to figure out who it is or will be? He warns us that the deception of the Antichrist will be very appealing because of the amount of truth he will embed in the lies.Based on his belief that the answer to when the End Times will occur, Biltz identifies a series of events that we need to look out for and that is worth the price of the book itself. Early in his introduction, he does give us an indication that he believes we are likely living in the last third of this present age. I’ll let you discover how he arrives at that for yourselves – and it is most interesting and convincing, at least to me.However, he makes it clear throughout the book, that his views are merely his beliefs based on his research and study. We can make up our own minds.This is a book that I very highly recommend. It is informative no matter what your faith is or isn’t. It makes you think. A surprisingly easy read for the topic, but not an easy journey in thought. Very thought-provoking and challenging doctrine and teachings of the three basic religions while maintaining a balance between them directing the reader to more closely examine what he is saying. He shows facts and insights that I, as a Christian believer in Yeshua, have not seen elsewhere. Reading this is unsettling as is reading Daniel Gruber's "Messianic Writings" and his new book "This Man." A very worthwhile read and one that will cause you to think "are you kidding, no you're not."

Well, I made it to page 30 before I gave up. And the last ten pages I read with a morbid fascination more than interest in the book...Chapter 1 is an introduction and you cannot really get that wrong. The author tried, by sticking to a passive voice and overly complicated descriptions of relatively simple concept, but the style is a matter of taste, so I won't complain too much about that. Chapter 2, however, is an overview of mathematical concepts needed for the rest of the book, and you certainly *can* objectively see when that is just plain wrong. And boy is it. Particularly the description of linear algebra is, well, worse than wrong. It doesn't make sense anywhere. He can't even define vector addition and subtraction correctly. And gods know what he is trying to do when he writes about matrix multiplication, 'cause there are obviously several versions of that in place and only a few places the kind that a linear algebra textbook would teach you. Hell, if he had taken the "using R" from the title serious and actually tried to do any of the computations he uses as examples in R, he would find that mostly the dimensions of the matrices he multiplies are wrong, and when not, the output from the correct answer has no relation to the answers in the book.I give up now.If practically every bit of math that I understand is incorrect in the book, I see no reason to believe that anything that might be new to me would be correct.

The e-book is very poorly formatted, with all the formulas extremely small and they do not zoom in with the text. There are so many obvious typos in both explanatory paragraphs and even technical terms (the author even used wrong abbreviations for the model he was talking about at one point). The codes for Ch5 on GitHub only have 7 lines, it seems that the author deleted the rest by accident. The book was written in 2017, but not many new packages are introduced. Plus, the first example in Ch10 is predicting stock prices, which we know is not predictable. Last but not least, the book is subtitled implementation of DL models using R, but about 80% of it was on theories and math. While math is important, I would have bought the classic DL theory book if I wanted to read about math.

The author wrote the book for people who already have programming knowledge. I dont have programming knowledge or advance mathematics skills so the book is difficult for me to comprehend. Also there is no example or problem with answers to help or enhance learning.I will return this book.

The book covers many topics in machine learning in an extremely superficial way. Most of the book is not about deep learning and the inclusion of R scripts is not adequate. The mathematics underpinning of methods is totally lacking. It's better just pull out a few review papers in the field rather than reading this book. The title of the book is misleading. The content is exceptionally shallow. Avoid.

A solid review of introductory methods of ML/DL for those who are entering the field with some background in mathematics and programming. The jargon and abstractness can catch some readers (including myself) but it can be a good reference in your library.

While subjects such as statistics and deep learning are not intuitive, Beysolow demonstrates his prowess in a multitude subjects and covers a lot of dense material. He accomplishes this in such a way that allows individuals who are relatively new to the vast subjects have a very good foot to understanding all the topics covered including: A/B testing, different types of regression modeling, Deep Belief Networks, along with other important Machine Learning such as Neural Networks. It is an excellent book to learn from or reference while performing and troubleshooting any of the modeling techniques with R. I am extremely impressed and am thankful to have been able to read and apply several of these models that I initially did not use prior.If anyone is interested in learning how to use R and understanding the world of Deep Learning, this book would be a step in the right direction.

Well worth it. What stood out the most was the organization of topics and presentation of a deep (no pun intended) topic from a ground-floor-up perspective. Before reading the book, my familiarity with deep learning amounted to having read a few blog posts. With intermediate knowledge of R and having finished this book, I feel confident with writing and training several deep learning models, and have a great foundation for further expanding my knowledge on the topic. Thanks for your awesome work!

This book covers a lot of ground. The author lays out all the tools he will need at the start of the book - a review of all the relevant statistical concepts, a thorough explanation of machine learning, and introduction to neural networks - and uses them with care and precision to lay out a thorough grounding in Deep Learning. While it's intellectually pretty heavy-weight, I think Beysolow sells himself short when he suggests that the reader should have some decent familiarity with the R programming language and statistics. As someone who doesn't know R and whose statistics knowledge was pretty rusty, the methodical, I found that the step-by-step introduction of new concepts meant that there was plenty for me in this book (even if I'm sure some of the nuance was lost on me).An excellent introduction to one of the most important fields in computer science today.
