I first read this book when I was 13. I am now 66. Did it influence my life? Looking back, perhaps even more so than I had realized. It was 1963 when I read it. I had been reading dystopias and had just finished "Brave New World." There was so much talk about LSD, mescaline, peyote and other hallucinogens as being "mind-expanding" and all that stuff that is now history. One interesting point of history regarding Aldous Huxley's life. He died the day JFK was shot. He was taking LSD at the time because he wanted to experience death as fully as he could.The title was taken from William Blake who had said, "If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite." That quote and this book would later help Jim Morrison in naming his band, "The Doors."I read it with rapt attention. I was entranced. When I reread it recently, I was amazed at how much I remembered and how much of my life choices it had influenced.I do remember that I promised myself at that young age, that when I was older, I would try these drugs as the search for "God" and spirituality was very important to me then and is still now.In particular, I recall the passage where, staring at a simple chair, Huxley waxed eloquently about what the chair revealed about its maker. Most of all, I recall his referring to perceiving the "isness" of the chair.This book was originally published in 1954. It was an important book then and it remains so now. It is a "must-have" for the library of any seeker of the truth, any who seek "higher learning", (pun intended and not), any who are investigators of world spirituality. Very highly recommended.

This is a great book, but be sure to avoid the "Important Books" edition (the one with the black cover and red/green/white lettering). It is a bootleg printing of terrible quaity. The cover image is a low-resolution jpeg that's been stretched to more than twice its original size, the text inside was obviously edited in MS word without any care. Do not buy this edition, you will be better off reading from a computer screen.

This book didn’t blow my mind (mainly because anyone who’s versed in psychedelics has likely read more recent material than this 1952 book, as much progress has been made on the ideas Huxley discusses) however it presents some very interesting and valid thoughts and observances, especially for its time. It’s safe to say that several of his descriptions and assumptions were well ahead of their time and resonate with me by remaining relevant even in the present day.The one thing I didn’t like about the book is that I felt it went off subject and drifted too much with irrelevant subject matter - however - considering when it was written, this may have been necessary to paint an accurate picture and to articulate a comparison of “normal” reality for those unacquainted with LSD, psilocybin or Mescaline.I would recommend this read to anyone who likes Huxley and has an interest in the classic early writings on psychedelics.

The doors of perception is an interesting description of the author's experience with psychedelics but if you yourself have never tried them it might not be too interesting. Heaven and Hell is worth less attention unless you are really interested in art

i've never had someone parallel my thoughts on psilocybin so perfectly, yet in the absolute best wording possible... Worth a read for all of you who have had an eye opening trip and need to consolidate some of your thoughts. Huxley somehow predicted our building of perception when we would not solidify these theories until just recently with modern neuroscience. He did it with his own doors of perception, and excellent philosophical mindset. He predicted many things that are true. I was shocked when I found out this was written in the 50's. A true renegade of his time."Most of these modifiers of consciousness cannot now be taken except under doctor’s orders, or else illegally and at considerable risk. For unrestricted use the West has permitted only alcohol and tobacco. All the other chemical Doors in the Wall are labeled Dope, and their unauthorized takers are Fiends."

Great book! Aldous Huxley has some really great observations about his experience with mescaline, and interprets them in a very contemporary existentialist manner.

I don’t remember reading a book that’s so concise yet full of thought-provoking ideas in every paragraph. The second essay has a very unique approach to analyzing arts through their ability to induce a trip to the “ other world of the mind”.

Overall, I liked it. I thought that there were some good insights that will be helpful to me. I did think that it was verbose, and at times, it took way too many words to get to a point. I did like the way he wove things together.

We've had this calendar for 4 years and love it. The photos are beautiful. I am not a morning person, and changing the picture every morning (except Sundays, because Sat/Sun is one page) improves my mood significantly. We really enjoy the daily cat pictures. Also, the stand is very stable, so my cats haven't ever knocked it down - another bonus!

BEAUTIFUL calendar... I would give this 5 stars EXCEPT they reuse a lot of images... I bought the 2015 edition and the 2017 edition and even 10 days into the year I am seeing a lot of repetition... so the moral of the story is you can really only enjoy it one year unless you have the memory of a goldfish. Plus I think it's cheap of the publisher to just reuse so many images.... they are lucky they are getting the 3 stars I am giving, that is all for quality of images and the fact I am crazy cat lady. ;)

The calendar itself is nice - photos are crisp and professional-looking. The only thing that I wish was different was the use of quotes for each day - you see cat-related quotes on some days, but more often than not you have silly remarks from the publisher on the pictures... for example:"An indoor dreamer imagines what the day holds in store.""The muse takes a moment to consider the finished masterpiece.""You never know what you might learn from a peek inside someone's shoe."Seriously... I'd rather have cat-related quotes or nothing than have these sorts of trite comments.

I got the 2016 version as a gift and LOVE it. Now I bought 3 more for 2017, make great gifts for my cat loving family! The pics are stunning and they make me laugh and smile everyday. I love the daily ritual of seeing the new Cat of the Day.

I've been getting the Workman Publishing Page-A-Day Gallery calendar of cats for several years. They always have high quality photography, even if the captions are sometimes a little inane. ;)Bonus: After the year is over, you have a LOT of kitty photos for craft projects -- either you or the kids!

I like that the pictures used aren't typical "cute cat pictures", but weird shots of cats. For example, we'll get like a close up of a cat's butt, or a pissed off looking cat under a chair. I will add that Saturdays and Sundays are on one page.

Purrrfect. Have one for current year and love the quality of the photos - from artistic photographs to the thick card stock. Ordered next year's because I know I'd miss seeing my daily cat picture once the current year is over.

I've bought this for several years and have never been disappointed. How do they get the cats to pose like that? Must be a mystery.

this is a quote from the back cover: "The original book, published in 1902, contained more than thirty of Kipling's own brilliant illustrations, all of which have been faithfully reproduced in this Aziloth Books edition." "BRILLIANT" and "FAITHFULLY REPRODUCED" IS TOTALLY INACCURATE. The book itself is not large and the inside illustrations are ALL BLACK AND WHITE and SO RIDICULOUSLY SMALL that the reproductive quality is non-existant. The stories and poems are fine. I am SOOOOO DISAPPOINTED when the ILLUSTRATIONS, just as delightful as Kilings writings are impossible to enjoy..even the larger ones are reproduced so badly, fuzzy B&W lines. Some are as small as <1/2" by <1/1/2 " !!!

This book was released July 1, 2018 and I pre-ordered without reviews as none were available. I was surprised to find 2700 reviews on this book right after Amazon received it in mid-July, 2018. My review is for "this specific book." Amazon has generic reviews listed for this book of all the Rudyard Kipling "Jungle Books" they sell, so we customers do not know what reviews applies to what books. Amazon did this also with Rudyard Kipling's Just So Stories many books Amazon sells. Not acceptable! This specific book, released July 1, 2018, is abridged with illustrations that can help a child understand how a boy could grow up with animals in the wild. Well written story. Definitely for ages 5 and up. I will give it to my grandson, but feel I cannot give it to my granddaughters because it has various illustrations of boy nudity from the back. 1 picture of bare butt would have been enough; the other illustrations could have had foliage discreetly hiding the nudity.

“Just So Stories” is a collection of 12 children’s stories. The theme that runs through the dozen stories is that they are mostly tall-tale answers for questions that children might have. All but two of them focus on animals and nature, and the two divergent stories deal with the origin of written language. Since it’s such a small collection and the titles tend to synopsize the stories, I’ll include the table of contents below, which may give one greater insight into the nature of the stories.1.) How the Whale Got his Throat2.) How the Camel Got his Hump3.) How the Rhinoceros Got his Skin4.) How the Leopard Got his Spots5.) The Elephant’s Child6.) The Sing-Song of Old Man Kangaroo7.) The Butterfly that StampedThe edition that I have has a number of black-and-white graphics (block print and line drawn style)—one or two per story. Given the genre, I imagine most editions have some kind of pictures, but your edition’s graphics may vary. A number of the stories include short poetry—usually at the end. I first encountered this story as a child, as an animated film on television. It became my favorite story, with the cadence of the narration and the wonderful animation bringing the story to life. I used to watch it every year, just like the Christmas specials and The Wizard of Oz. I've even seen it a few times as an adult, each time reliving a little piece of my childhood.When I saw this book recently, on a list of free books, I grabbed it up so I could carry this little piece around with me all the time. I was kind of afraid to actually read the story, because so often these days books and their movies don't have much in common. However, this is word for word the animated story I have enjoyed so many times; or should I say the animated film is just like the book. The language is lyrical, and there is a rhythm to the story that reinforces this quality. If I had a child, since they don't show the film any more, this would be a regular on the bedtime story list, and not just for the language. The themes of making the best of what happens to you in life, and of protecting your family, are woven throughout this story, as well as using common sense when planning anything you have to do. I'm going to grab The Jungle Book next!

This is a beautiful copy of Just So Stories. As others have mentioned, it is a small volume but the cover is embossed and the pages are gilded. The paper is thin--not due to cheapness but rather it is fine paper. It contains the original illustrations and their captions, and it is just lovely.I ordered this copy because I was unable to find the copy my grandfather had given me as a child, which was a rather sizeable volume complete with colored illustrations on glossy paper. This copy is nothing like that volume, which held up well to the repeated use of a young child. This volume is meant for the caring, gentle hands of an older child or adult. If your child cannot use tissue paper without tearing it, this is not the volume for him or her.That said, if your child loves the stories, this would be a wonderful book to give him or her when she or he grows up.

Kipling wrote for a more leisurely age. The stories make use of a wide vocabulary and literary devices such as repetition and alliteration. It is hard for a modern child to fully understand. But there is something going on at a deeper level. They love the rhythm of Kipling. The story lines are exquisitely crafted. They like to ask questions about the vocabulary. They are fascinated with the subjects of the stories. You can read the story as written, then retell it often in your own words. For instance, I told my son the story of the insatiably curious elephant child this week when he was pestering me with questions. Then pretended to pull his nose.Also at a deep level, Kipling teaches traditional values and shares deep wisdom. The females in his stories (First Woman in The cat who walked alone, the Tailor Bird's wife in Rikki Tiki Tavi) are fully drawn and quite intelligent.It is a classic.

The book itself is written on a third grade level. (The educational publishing company should have been a red flag.) If you are purchasing this for a die hard fan that is looking for an actual biography, look elsewhere. It reads like an elementary school book report. The front cover looked like the plastic coating was bubbled and peeling. There was also a noticeable scratch as well. The book was slightly bent as it was shipped in an envelope. The package itself was not damaged.

In the same vein of Georgia Weidman book at beginning pentesting....this is THE book to start with hands down.It is the most current and the instruction found in the book is extremely easy to follow.Unfortunately, much of the material in her (Wiedmans) book is outdated, but Zaids book has that covered!The complex issues are broken down in to portions that are digestible and they build on each other.The author also has a Udemy video course of the same name that seems to follow the subject matter in the book.He is very responsive and you also find it easy to follow the examples that he provides.I cannot stress enough how good the author is at conveying ideas to beginners to give them a VERY good basis for entering the pentesting/cracking (white hat) realm.This book definitely deserves a look if you are heading into this realm of cybersecurity.

I've have this book since it came out, it (along with a course I discovered on (now this is not a plug for it) Udemy by the same name and author, Zaid) has been instrumental for me in learning the basics and concepts of setting up a fully functional system for Pen Testing. It was like being in school again for me (the book as a textbook and the supplemental video course by Zaid was just what the doctor ordered.Zaid is clear and concise in his method of instruction and knows the subject of Pen Testing and Cyber Security very well.I don't understand why the other rater gave him a 1 star and couldn't get past page 4, and YES, all the downloads and links work fine, guess that guy is new to certain aspects of knowing how systems work.Bottomline, this book is absolutely awesome and deserves to be right up with the best on the subject of Pen Testing.

The book links you to a website do download supplemental materials, of which there are none. not even at the github page. What a joke, Been looking forward to this all week and now I can't get past page 4. What a sham. I'll be returning this.

Zaid is very thorough with his delivery to beginners.

This book is grade A for the basics of "hacking" without coding skills!!!

I haven't actually read this book because I took his online course but I know what this book contains and it's valuable information to learn penetration testing and ethical hacking. If you prefer to read, this is sure to be one of the best resources out there! If you like video courses check out the authors website or courses on Udemy.
