Not worth buying if you have Internet access, which you probably do.It's good at laying out some basics but it simply isn't thorough. I spent about a week struggling through this book, putting in 30 minutes a night AT LEAST ... and then one evening I started pulling up YouTube videos to follow along to, and learned more in half an hour than in that week of work. Gee, looks like I could have gotten that for free.This book is really light on explanation, unfortunately, and as a complete newbie to any musical instrument at all, explanation was what I needed. It also has very very few songs, just a lot of exercises. It seems much easier to figure out an instrument on a song you know, because you have an "ear sense" for what the song ought to sound like.The BIG thing lacking was a good explanation of strumming. You know, that's actually fairly complicated? A ten minute youtube video on strum techniques improved my sound immeasurably, when before I couldn't figure out quite what was wrong.It's not worth the buy if you've got other resources (such as: the whole internet) available to you.
This book has a serious issue in that all the chord diagrams fail to show the student which fingers to use. This is as important as to where each finger goes. With out this information it will make learning chords 10x more difficult than if the charts had the correct fingering. This is not the book for beginners! I am an expert reined guitar player and give lessons so I would never have a student learn chords with out using the proper finger placement in the chord.
I purchased Play Ukulele Today to accompany a beautiful Ukulele Luna MALU Mahogany Series Maluhia (Peace) Concert Ukulele that I was giving as a gift to a musician friend who had never played the ukulele before. I thought it would be a nice accompaniment because my experience has been that musicians don't have much patience for learning a new instrument but like the basics so they can take it from there. This guide really did enable him to follow the instructions and begin playing within minutes. I think even if someone weren't musically inclined, they would be able to move right along with this book and the instructions so that they could begin playing in a short period of time.
I was surprised how easy and quickly this got me making noises that are somewhat pleasant. Previous attempts at learning instruments had been horrible failures. I recommend this to any beginners or people who want to try the uke. People who have experience with a guitar or bass will probably find this way too simple for them. If you're on the fence about learning uke, I recommend it, the instrument is small, portable, easy to get started, and sounds decent.
I really like this book for beginners. I just got a ukulele and have never played a string instrument before and I thought it was really helpful. The only thing that I think could have been better is the chord glossary. I wish it was more complete. I end up having to look up chords online because it doesn't have them all in the book. Other than that I really enjoyed this book.
This book is great! So much information. This was part of a gift for my daughter. She is 10 (11 on Dec 23) and within an hour she was playing songs! Very clear instructions with great knowledge on the ukulele. She's only had it for 2 days now and has learned most of the cords and playing her little heart out. I highly recommend this book (the audio is great also). Even I learned a lot about the ukulele. Must have for any beginner. Fast shipping as well.
My 18 year old daughter decided to buy a ukulele and teach herself to play. She ordered this book and only 2 weeks into it, is playing very well. I am happily surprised - she loves it. She does have a bit of background in beginning piano and can read music like a pro, in case that's relevant.
I liked the lessons that showed the locations on each string of the notes in accordance to written music. Since I've tried to learn how play guitar I was familiar with FACE and E G B D F ??? I'm not sure, I'd have to hold the guitar. I haven't tried the web site as yet. I'm practicing pages up to 15 on a day to day basis. Once I have these pages memorized and can handle each change in chords and strings I'll move on. It's been helpful
