This is an amazing story of the courage and faith of a thirteen year old girl living through horrific times. In the first part Nonna talks how she enjoyed her family and what it was like being a kid back then. Her family had many grain mills and was pretty well off...until the war hit and the government took over every single one of their mills. The government allowed them the big family house which they stayed in when the government strongly suggested they evacuate. They stayed to protect what little they had left. Nonna's grandmother hoped that the house would be a meeting place for their scattered family after the war. This book is written through Nonna's tender eyes and how she made sense of things at thirteen. After their Christmas celebration, the war started and rumors spread. No one was sure how close the enemy was. Nonna writes in her diary, "I was confused, angry and sad about what the Germans had done. Also, I was trying to figure out what the Jews had done to be treated this way. There was no reason that I could think of." She soon found out that no one was safe from the Germans.Because Nonna's family refused to evacuate, they would be treated as traitors and possibly killed. So, Nonna writes, "...when the Germans offered us transportation to Germany, we had no choice but to take them up on their offer. The Germans needed some laborers in their factories. We heard later that those who stayed behind and did not leave Konstantinowka were thrown on trains and sent to Siberia or killed."An adult Nonna writes this, "I believe forgiveness is important. It is to forgive, as God teaches us, but never forget--rather, to apply the truth to our lives in such a way that we do not repeat our sins over and over again."This is one powerful story told through innocent eyes, trying to make sense of the world around her. It's a miracle she has survived to tell this courageous eye witness account. You won't want to miss this one.Nora St. LaurentACFW Book Club Coordinator

This is a simply awesome read about how a Russian Immigrant survive the Stalin and Hitler regime --- a tale she held in her heart and didn’t even tell any of her family after she arrived to America and married her husband, of 53 years ---- and, managed to live a most wonderful life carrying the happy memories she had of her dead family with her. History repeats itself unless the stories are told – and this story is a remarkable telling of a truth people need to face! It brings history to life and throws it in your face!

I hope and pray that Nona found her peace and finally reunited with her lost family. Please read and share this story. And to the German government: shame on you. After 50 years delay, you still sent Nona a check for the same amount as it was intended to be issued immediately after the war. Your ancestors destroyed her entire family, killed and burned her loved ones, took her life away and still you did not have the decency to at least adjust the check amount for the inflation. Instead of giving her that and additional money as a sign of apology for everything you have caused to Nona, you shamelessly sent her your miserable check 5 decades later. You are no different than your Nazi bloodlines.

This is a very tragic yet beautiful story. Nonna recalls happy times in her childhood before everything changed for her. It was heartwarming to read about the times she shared with her family, times she greatly treasure throughout her life. It was heartbreaking to then read of all the horrors her and her family faced during World War II. Her story is interesting because she wasn’t in a concentration camp, but rather was a slave laborer - still essentially improsoned, still witnessing truly awful things, but a bit of a different aspect that was interesting. She also tells of how she rebuilt her life after all the struggle. This was heartbreaking and also inspiring. Truly wonderful book.

This was a story of the life a young girl who saw it all fall apart as the Communist Russian government changed her early life of plenty to one of hardship. Many of her family members lost their lives as the Germans under Adolf Hitler invaded Russia and all were affected, not only the Jews. Nonna kept diaries and journaled about all these events through her growing years. After American Soldiers ended WWI, she had no family left, so pursued the dream of her father and moved to America. She met her future husband shortly after arriving, and she kept everything that happened during her early life deep inside. After about forty years, she finally decided to share her early life and the story of the Holocaust with her beloved husband. She opened her journals and dictated to him in English the events she had recorded, and he typed her words. They were married for fifty-three years when she died, and upon her death her family decided to publish this story.I was horrified at her details. The Holocaust was real. The book tells the story in chronological order, but there are a few spots that seemed repetitious, but considering the personal information shared, I believe Nonna Bannister did an excellent job of transcribing it from the eight languages she had written it in.The book gives many details; some of it might not be suitable for young children, but it should be read by all.

I chose this book because I love true history! I felt like I was with Nonna throughout this entire book! At times she brought me back to my own childhood in New England! When we visited with my own mothers farm after a good snowfall! My uncles would hitch some horses to the family sleigh , we would all bundle up get big blankets & ride all around the little town & fields of Dracut, Mass! I used to love those nights, with my Mom's family! Nonna brought me right back to my favorite childhood memories!
