A Vietnam and life memoirI bought this book and, unable to wait for delivery, I bought it again on Kindle. By the time the hard copy arrived, I had a mere ten pages left to read. Being a both a Vietnam combat veteran myself and a published author of an historical account of my time there, I was astounded by Kniffen’s courage—and I’m not talking about the kind where you are resigned to move forward with your unit while expecting that bullet between the eyes at any moment. It is evident that he surely had that. I’m talking about the kind of courage where a man is able write from deep inside himself with an astoundingly honest “stream of consciousness†style and say the things we all want to say but lack that unique inner courage to do so. As I read, I found myself continually nodding in the affirmative while thinking, “I don’t have the kind of courage that it takes to put this kind of truth on paper for all to readâ€, even though I was once in that place where I too was prepared to take that proverbial bullet between the eyes. He is profound and frighteningly honest—yet visceral for sure. He weaves a journey through the deep depths of hell and you will walk with him with pathos for the human spirit only to joyously climb out the other end into the brilliant light of love. This is a “must read†for all civilians, combat veterans and noncombatants alike. You will get a glimpse of the hell of war—as much as you can hope for without firsthand experience. Charles Kniffen is a natural writer - the words just flow. Intense, to be sure, but also compelling. He tells the story of his time in Vietnam, and what followed that time. They say "war is hell" but just because the war ends does not mean the warriors can ever come home, at least not as the same person. If I say any more I'll say too much, and not as well as Kniffen does.
I put my time in as a Marine grunt in Vietnam and, like author Charles Kniffen, have spent the past fifty years in a foxhole. Kniffen’s words are from the gut and soul, and they ring true. I have spent untold hours in counseling and VA Center PTSD group sessions, but this book was an epiphany for me. I will be rereading this outstanding book and recommending it to my band of brothers who have also spent the past half century in foxholes. Semper Fi, Kniffen!
I found this book at the West Quoddy Gift Shop while vacationing in Maine in September 2018.I read a lot of books on war and combat and was looking for something to read the next day as the forecast was for rain.While the book contains some great combat stories it contains a whole lot more. In my opinion the author has an incredible writing style. The book details parts of his life outside of the Vietnam war and is just incredible reading. Don’t want to give away any of the story so I won’t go into details but I will say it was a real page turner. Could not put the book down and finished it quickly.A great read. Highly recommended.Would love to see more work from the writer.
This is a fiery, dynamic read folks. The writing and style are brilliant and sharp tongued. Keenly allows the reader to enter a soldier's battles. Gutsy and frank, lusty and fearless. I encourage you to read this book.
