A great story to introduce children to Martin Luther, the Reformation, and the difference between earning our salvation and living in grace. However, I changed about half a dozen words when I read it to my children. The book excessively extols Martin Luther himself with words like "greatest" and, in my opinion, paints the Catholic church in an entirely negative light. I softened some of the superlatives to remove the excessively black / white perspective on the church and the figures involved, then followed the reading with further discussion on grace.

Excellent book. My oldest is 6 and she has asked me to read it repeatedly and it has sparked some wonderful conversations. I believe it will be interesting for many more years and she will continue to get more out of as she matures. The illustrations are beautiful.

If you are going to teach history to your children, there can be little doubt that Martin Luther is a major historical figure. His critiques of the Catholic Church fundamentally changed the world. Yet surprisingly, there are relatively very few Martin Luther biographies aimed at elementary school aged children. What makes "Martin Luther: A Man Who Changed The World" different from the other biographies that I have read to my children is that it was written by a Luthern for other Lutherns. Although there is this specific orientation, I nevertheless found the book to be both well written and illustrated. Martin Luther led a fascinating life and this book does an excellent job of re-telling Martin Luther's story for young children. Recommended.

The book has a lot of words, but it is large and beautiful. I didn't end up reading the whole thing to my kids (7, 5, and 4), but maybe in a few years. My oldest read a lot of it himself before getting bored and moving on. We have a lot of friends from Germany who were having a Reformation Party so I thought I'd try to introduce my kids to who he was before then. It didn't happen, but that's ok.

Beautiful illustrations, responsible interpretation of Luther (though he's domesticated a bit, the work was put together by Lutherans and that's also to be expected in a children's book). I used it in a teen Sunday School class, actually, and it was a big help.

The pictures are lovely. But this book perpetuates Lutheran anti-Semitism. At the end it includes statements about how sad Luther was that the Jews did not come back to the Gospel after it was perified. While that is a true statement about Luther, it's not a nuetral statement and it's not something you treat as a reasonable statement in a book for children. Violent words have consquences. Consquences that continue the play out in the real world. This book perpetuates that.

Beautiful picture book highlighting the important events in Luther's life, and why the Reformation was the result. Great resource for introducing the subject to kids, but would disagree with the recommended age -- the vocabulary used and Luther's belief in the concept of grace (a person can't "earn" their way to heaven) a bit over the head of younger kids (4-6), altho they still will pick up on basic story. My experience with reading this to kids is that even those a bit older (8-10) will enjoy, and probably come away with a better grasp of the importance of Luther's life and teachings. I like that the author also touches on the fact that for all Luther's greatness, a few of his opinions (I believe much later in his life) weren't necessarily favorable -- allowing you to respect his genius without making him a "saint". Not at all "preachy" -- just a good overview of the story and Luther's beliefs. A book all Lutherans should read, but also important and interesting to those of other denominatons or just interested in history, as Luther's ideas ended up having an effect on many aspects of society (education, politics, banking, etc. -- you'll have to go beyond this book to discover why) which benefit us still today.

An short, informative history by a well-known historian. In a book that is targeted to elementary and middle school ages Maier highlights the impact upon religious and secular life of arguably the most significant thinker of the early 16th Century in Western culture. Luther's carefully-researched work helped to shape the concept of secular vocation, theology, the authority of the Bible, and music in the church. Very effective illustrations.
