Good book, fast shipping, excellent condition. This book came in exactly as expected and the content is perfect for a freshman boy. My son had to write a short paper over the summer for the first day of school, and thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story is about a young man who has lost his way and when his life completely changes (because his living situation does), he not only thrives physically but also learns life lessons along the way. He learns that everyone is not as fortunate as he is, although it may not appear to him that he IS fortunate, and he also learns the value in putting other people first. He learns to appreciate the selfless acts of others and pay those acts forward to help the less fortunate. My son is not an avid reader and it was no problem getting him to stay focused on this story. Well written, well packaged, well shipped. Highly recommend for this age group and from this seller.

From jail to the top of the world!Basically, the plot of this book is a kid named Peak Marcello (whose parents use to be climbers) tries to climb a skyscraper but gets caught by the police who thought he was a terrorist right before he made it to the top. Then in trial his dad shows up and offers to take Peak to Tibet,China away from New York in hope that eventually people would forget about his climb. Then, Peak’s dad surprises him and takes him to climb Mt. Everest. As I mentioned the book starts out in New York. Before he climbs Everest, his dad takes him to Tibet, China to get his climbing gear. After getting his climbing gear, the rest of the book takes place on Mt. Everest. The Main characters are Peak,Peak’s Dad and Mom,The Two Peas (Peak’s twin sisters), and his language arts teacher. The Main character,Peak, has an angry grudge towards his father for leaving them when Peak was little; however, as they get farther up the mountain they start to trust each other and that grudge slowly wears out.The book is written in a perspective where Peak is writing this book in a moleskine notebook as he climbs Mt. Everest. He explains this at the beginning of the book. I think the author of this book (Roland Smith) nailed the way the story is being told. The way it’s written, Peak sounds just like a fourteen year old boy trying to reach the top of Everest. If that’s what the author was going for, he did a great job.I think the theme of this book is that it’s not the mountain that matters,it’s what lies at the bottom. I know this because on the last page of the book (page 246) Peak says: “The only thing you’ll find on the summit of Mount Everest is a divine view. The things that really matter lie far below.” I don’t think the author would have made those the last two sentences if he didn’t want the reader to remember that.Overall, I thought the book was great! I couldn’t put it down!

Peak is the ultimate action/survival/friendship/adventure story! Peak opens with the retelling of the time that Peak Marcello scaled a skyscraper in New York, then being arrested for the feat and taken to court. Peak’s parents were there and his biological father is presented the opportunity to take Peak to Thailand for a while, or send him to jail in New York City. Peak then embarks on the trip with his father to Thailand; only to realize that they are not going to Thailand at all. They are going to climb Mount Everest. They are going to Kathmandu. Peak’s father needs to ramp up his business with the climbing company, so to get publicity he tries to get Peak to become the world’s youngest person to scale the mountain.Peak is then set up to go climbing, after days upon days Peak fights to get to the summit. Disease is spread throughout the entire camp and many people leave the mountain. Some people even die on the trek up. As Peak rears the summit he is faced with a huge decision. It’s up to you to find out what he does next.• Peak Marcello- Peak is the main character; he climbs Mount Everest with hopes of becoming the youngest person in the world to reach the summit. Very bold and courageous, but tends to keep to himself.• Josh- Peak’s biological father, helps Peak try to reach the summit. Hard on the outside, but soft on the inside.• Sun-Jo- A boy only six days older than Peak, is a fellow competitor to become the youngest to reach the summit. He and Peak are in a fight for duration of the book. Smart and clever, but friendly towards Peak.• Zopa- The monk that guides Sun-Jo and Peak up Everest, he cares deeply for Sun-Jo. Zopa is very old and wise, with plenty of advice to give to those in need.• Holly Angelo- a reporter that follows Peak up the mountain and befriends him on the way. Very nosy, but you can tell that she does care about Peak.• The Twins- Paula and Patrice; Peak’s twin sisters, they are actually only his half-sisters though. Very small and tend to laugh a lot.• Yogi and Yash- Two Sherpas that accompany Peak and Sun-Jo up Mount Everest. The two tend to keep to themselves during the book, but do provide some helpful information to Peak and sun-Jo.• Teri Marcello- Peak’s mother. She loves Peak but doesn’t fully approve of him climbing Everest due to a serious climbing injury she suffered.A major theme throughout this book is Perseverance. Peak battles major winds and harsh, snowy weather. Peak also feels he needs to improve his relationship with Josh, although Josh shows no sign of love for Peak. Peak is also shocked by the amount of people with disease. As the book progresses he shows a little more care for Peak. Peak has to have perseverance to make it up the mountain. This book is dull in the beginning and a little confusing, but as it proceeds the story develops and blooms into a wonderful book! I would recommend it to someone who likes to wonder why characters make certain decisions. Peak provides a wonderful friendship story of Peak and Sun-Jo, and how Peak develops empathy for Sun-Jo. Peak is an overall good book, for everyone!

Fantastic story for middle school girls or boys (and adults too!). This has all the elements of a great story with a great plot, good character development and growth for the protagonist. Good vocabulary and sentence structure for growing reading proficiency etc. I would definitely recommend.

I chose this book as a read aloud to summer school students. Smith provides the perfect combination at adventure and imagination. Students can relate and identify with the characters of Peak and Sung-Jo. Twists and turns. I would highly recommend this book to students, teachers and anyone who wants an adventure without leaving their reading chair!

I read this with orally with my teenage grandson who has ADD. He tried reading it on his own, got tangled up in the vocabulary, lost the meaning of the sentences, and finally his interest.I like orally reading with him and he brought this book. We took turns reading, stopping at the unknown words and discussing the book. When we fininished we both felt satisfied. While this in considered teen literature, it is interesting to adults too. In fact the young man developed into a very responsible young adult by the end of the book.

Review

"In elegant, year clear, and easy-to-read prose, Pommersheim provides a summative legal history and a constitutional analysis of some of the core Supreme Court decisions related to the role of the US Constitution in American Indian law...useful and accessible for American Indian tribal governments and tribal citizens, as well as of interest to scholars and students in other disciplines, such as Political Science and American Indian Studies."--Law and Politics Book Review"A useful study...adequately conveys some of the fascinating difficulties and conundrums that severely complicate the relationship between indigenous nations, their tribal citizens, and the United States."--American Historical Review"Offers a close and devastating reading of the defining cases in the field...Part of the mastery displayed in the text is [Pommersheim's] ability to move so quickly yet so thoroughly from the Cherokee Cases of the 1830s to Lone Wolf v. Hitchcock to contemporary Supreme Court cases...A nuanced, thoughtful, and original approach--a unique contribution to Indian law, and essential reading for all those interested in the field."--CHOICE"Pommersheim delivers a beautifully written, detailed account of the complicated nature of Indian nations within the federal system and provides a roadman for understanding how tribal sovereignty has been situated-directly or indirectly-in the American constitutional framework since the nation's founding...The sweeping project chronicles a history that is, for scholars in the field, comfortably familiar, yet Pommersheim sheds new light on historical events and policies that shaped the founding of the United States, and, accordingly, its relationship with the indigenous nations it encompasses...Broken Landscape is a comprehensive, beautifully crafted, ambitious work that courageously breaks from the swarm of contemporary critique of the Supreme Court's Indian law jurisprudence...Pommersheim has written the book as an invitation to dialogue, and an incitement to action."--Journal of Legal Education"Anyone who follows the writing about the Sioux (Lakota/Dakota/Nakota) cannot help but be attracted to a book with the title Broken Landscape...Pommerhseim spends some time indicating that he is pessimistic about the possibility that US courts and Congress will ever accept the criminal nature of their behavior so arduously traced in this text, which means that little can be done to rectify the sins of the past except to amend the Constitution and put our faith in the future of that document. This proposal is what make this book a milestone in the regional discussions here in South Dakota."--Wicazo Sa Review"An outside-in look at what has gone wrong within federal Indian law at the national level because of failures by the Congress and the Supreme Court. Pommersheim provides a wonderfully readable history about the development of law regarding Indians and Indian tribes."--Tribal College Journal of American Indian Higher Education"For Frank Pommersheim, the landscape of American Indian Law is broken because the Supreme Court's longstanding drift ignores both original constitutional intent and the quality of modern tribal governments. Can his call for a clarifying constitutional amendment to fortify tribal sovereignty, even given his deep scholarship and sensible, straightforward thinking, possibly be realistic? We'll see. But this powerful, compelling narrative puts the proposal on the table, and it will be noticed."--Charles Wilkinson, Distinguished University Professor and Moses Lasky Professor of Law at the University of Colorado, and author of American Indians, Time, and the Law and Blood Struggle"Professor Pommersheim has made an important new contribution to a significant project he initiated in Braid of Feathers. Instead of stopping with a critical dissection of our legal and historical understanding of tribes and Indian law, he proposes a new integration that is consonant with our best selves and with a deep understanding of what it means to be sovereign. Disagree where we will, we would do well to listen to his voice and to engage with his powerful vision."--Gerald Torres, Bryant Smith Chair in Law, University of Texas at Austin"Frank Pommersheim's Broken Landscape offers a brilliant, sweeping, and comprehensive overview of the development of Indian Law and the Constitution. The book will be to this generation of Indian law students and policy makers what Charles Wilkinson's American Indians, Time, and the Law was to the last."--Lindsay G. Robertson, Orpha and Maurice Merrill Professor of Law, History, and Native American Studies, University of Oklahoma

In Gutzman's and Woods's "Who Killed the Constitution," they describe numerous events and court decisions in our history that marked the end of the Constitution's power over our government. In essence the Constitution is dead. Frank Pommersheim in his book on the Native-Americans' treatment by our government, states that they had been given a raw deal and that the courts and Congress have totally broke away from any Constitutional moorings with regards to Indian law. In essence, the Constitution is dead to this group of people as well. Pommersheim summariized that the Constitution grants the Executive Branch with power to negoitate traties with Indian Tribes with the Senate concuring while the Legisltive Branch is given the power the regulate trade with the Indian Tribes. Other than that, there is very little in the Constitution that deals with Native-American affairs.Pommershiem goes into the early dealings with Indians from before the founding of this country to the disatrous decision of Lone Wolf v. Hitchcock which gave Congress unconstitutional "plenary" power to abrogate treaties with the Indians. The author goes into the "Marshall Trilogy." This trilogy is a set of cases that affected the Indians' right to the land that they occupied including Johnson v. M'Intosh. The second portion of the book deals with the citizenship issue and First Amendment rights of Native Americans, material that included the denial of Indians to perform certain acts according to their beliefs like gathering eagle feathers for ceremonies and using peyote. The final portion of the book deals with how modern courts have dealt with Indian issues and proposes solutions to restore tribal soveriegnty for these people.A few observations. Pommershiem states in his book that while he laments the fact that Congress blatantly violated the Constitution by aborgating treaties, he felt that it was no use to challenge it since such power was never struck down by the courts. This seems to be somewhat fatalistic in my opinion. He praises Justice Clarence Thomas for his concurring opinion in United States v. Lara in that Thomas excoriates past congressional actions that make the idea of tribal soveriegnty a nullity by regulating every aspect of tribal life and function. In light of the fact that a non-functioning Constitution is essentially dead, Pommersheim keeps referring to it as a "living" Constitution. Curious in my opinion. This book is 312 pages long with extensive end notes and an index. There is no bibliography however. While there might be differences in commentary between Gutzman, Woods and Pommersheim, one thing is for sure. The Constitution is no longer effective in our governance today and has not been for a long time. Four stars.

Loved, Loved, Loved Kat and Tommy’s (Kathryn and Tomas) story. Thank you Alexandria House! We asked and you delivered. That Uncle LeeChester....between “Lezbeen” and “Sectional”, I laughed so hard I got hiccups. This was a same day bought; same day read story. Perfect! I love that McClain family. I love this series! Thank you Alexandria House for sharing your creativity with us. I highly recommend this book, along with every book in this series! You can thank me later!

This was an amazing story about love, loyalty, protection & healing. We were introduced to Tomas aka Tommy due to his temporary hot, steamy love affair with Bridget. I felt sorry for Tomas because he wanted love without limitations. Kathryn aka Kat is smart, tall, beautiful, loyal with a broken heart. When these two are placed together, the FIYAH leaps off of the pages, especially when Papi, I mean Tomas began to speak Spanish. The threat of losing his life with his employers Big South & Leland couldn’t keep these two apart. Do yourself a huge favor and read or listen to the entire series. This novella is icy on a 7 seven layer cake.Congratulations!!!!

Got Mz House's email yesterday!! Purchased the book!! Read the book!! Liked the book!! (smile) So happy and surprised when I read the email that Kit-Kat, LOL, had a story. Loved her character throughout the McClain brothers' stories so was eager to read hers. I liked the background provided along with the interactions between her and Big East, according to Tomas' mother, and Leland. Very touching was the scene with her and Aunt Ever in the gazebo. Always hilarious when Unc is in the scene and his words of advice!!! LOL LOL Only thing missing is what Nolan, Mr Take Care of Business, did to the ex because I know he just wasn't going to let it go, no matter what Kit-Kat told them. So very happy for Kat and Tomas, LOL, and their HEA!!!

Didn’t know how to feel when the masses asked to have their story told and the author obliged. I had mixed feelings about this story. I wondered why Kat stayed with her douche of a husband for sixteen or so years (from high school to adulthood). I also wondered how she and her husband never had children. Why she continued to be with a serial cheater. Now to Tommy, it was interesting to know his background and so sweet to meet his mom and sister.Their story was short and sweet. It was a fast read and I finished read it in no time. Kat was a crazy hoot and Tommy won’t know shrinking violet. Tommy was torned for his loyalty to Big South and Leland and did not want to disrespect them, which I can respect. With Kat personality, I’m truly surprised that she took so much crap from that hubby until he “burned” her and then she got the hell out or else her behind will still be taking crap.Love The McClains.

One of the most requested and anticipated stories in the McClain series! Fans asked and Ms. House delivered! A quaint and impressive love story that unfolded in brother Nolan’s book “Let me Show You”. Readers are given a bird’s eye view thru the lens to the life of Kat McClain, how she loved, grieved, healed, matured, and learned to love again. This novella reached a crescendo of emotion and never let up!

I can't believe Alexandria House did it again. Once again the McClain family showed us what love of family, love of self and most importantly the power of healing love is all about. In this Chapter of the Mcclain's you'll laugh, cry, fall madly in love and discover the meaning of that forever love.Alexandria House, I never think twice about purchasing your books. I know that you'll keep my attention and the storyline will be well thought out. Your books have quickly become one of go to books while I'm waiting for a new release. Continue to be great in all you do.

Kat and Tommy are perfect together since they are both crazy as hell. I loved how Tommy didnt wanna break the trust of the brothers by being with Kat yet he knew either way he couldn't let her go!! That part in Morton's when Kat had her foot on Wayne's d*** was too funny. And that Uncle Lee Chester is something else. Sectional?? Really lmao This was a perfect ending to the McClain family series. I no longer have a favorite. I love them all as if they were my friends and family!!

Once again Ms. House does an outstanding job. Kat and Tomas' aka Tommy story was great. To see Kat open her heart and find love again after the way her no good husband treated her. Tommy was a stand up guy. I love the relationship he head with her brothers. Despite him saying he didn't want to lose his job in the beginning, in the end he was willing to give it all up for her. I would recommend this entire series to anyone looking for a great read.

This is really dense, every phrase has loads of meaning, and it is a lot to chew on and take in - and it's very useful. The section of diagnostic methods are worth frequent visits, and the sections in the back regading more in depth diagnoses of complex conditions are fascinating. The lists of Chinese diseases are very useful! Excellent book.

GREAT BOOK!!!!!!! Everything you ever wanted to know or need to know in your study of Chinese medicine and Diagnosis is all right here in this book! Great for the student and teacher alike!!!

excellent study material. Concise and clear, helped me to understand tcm, I will definately recommend it to people who study TCM

Very helpful for school.

This book is confusing at times. I bought it because it was a required book in my channel pathology class, but the instuctor (from China) said the book material wasn't great, so we didn't even use it.

The book was way more marked up than expected for the price. none the less required but will resale later.

I find myself turning to this book more and more for any and all inquiries I may have about TCM, pathology, and diagnosis. Sometimes the Chinese to English gets a little interesting.

The books were received quite fast. The books are good and satisfy. Thank you very much.

Daybreak Here we are again with another book about a serial killer stalking goose hunters in Iceland. In any case, it's up to two detectives to track him down - Gunnar and Birkir. The story didn't seem to start out that way which was a surprise to me. Then when other hunters were killed, it still seemed to me that there was going to be an explanation. As the story and the plot built, I would say that there wasn't a lot of tension for me. When the detectives were trying to answer the various quizzes that the killer gave them, my interest was fading even more. Usually, I don't quit on a book and I was interested to see what was going to happen. I have to admit that that was when the story really built up for me, especially at the end. I think that as a writer, if you're able to build the mystery up and create a unique type of story that justifies the end, then you did your job as a writer. I really have to give Viktor Arnar Ingolfsson credit for doing this. I was more than surprised on how he built the story up. It really sneaks up on you and I liked the way he did it. The story had great characters and the ending will be a memorable one for me. There were some things left in the air so I wonder if that will be in the next book. It seems like this can be a great series that I will keep up with. I thought by the time this story would be over, I would only give this book three stars. Now that I have finished it, I will give it four stars. I would have given it five if there was a little more suspense in the story. I thought that could have been done but I enjoyed the book enough to say that I would like to continue to read more books by Viktor Amar Ingolfsson.

His four books which have been translated into English are totally different from each other, and totally different from anything else I have read. They may challenge some readers because they don’t follow the usual expectations of character, pacing, clues, etc. - you really don’t quite know where each book is heading for a while. Each is totally rewarding and in my opinion absolutely brilliant - don’t give up! Supposedly he has written six altogether - PLEASE READ SO MORE OF HIS WORK GETS TRANSLATED!!!

I enjoyed this book. It caught my attention from the excerpt read before the purchase, and it held my interest throughout. The writing was a bit matter-of-fact, nothing flowery or fancy, "just the facts, ma'am," kind of writing. The main characters were developed enough to be identifiable, though perhaps their personalities were a little exaggerated: one's a slob, the other is extremely neat and organized. One is fairly compulsive in eating and drinking, while the other is very much in control. Scene description was good: I felt like I could visualize places and persons pretty well. Conversations seemed pretty natural. There was a lot of "thinking" as well as dialogue, so I could get into at least the main characters' minds. Perhaps my only quibble was that the ending and tie-up seemed rather abrupt. It all made sense, but it was just suddenly there, as if the criminal got tired of waiting to be found out and decided to expose h**self. The solution to the mystery was satisfying and unsatisfying at the same time. In a way, it makes me wish for a new novel with the same characters and a new crime, the beginning giving more finality to the end of this book while starting the new mystery. All to say, I did enjoy the book and would read another by the same author.

Here's another of Ingolfsson's gripping novels of Icelandic life. In this one two seemingly ill-matched detectives from the Reykjavik police's Violent Crimes Squad, the Vietnam-born (he is constantly asked, "do you speak Icelandic) Birkir, and Gunnar Mariuson--the one as neat as a pin, the other an unmade bed, constantly munching on snacks and drinking far too much are faced with what seems to be a serial killer killing goose-hunters in remote stretches of Iceland's bleak countryside. That they finally succeed is a tribute both to their fictive skills--assisted by the equally ingenious Dora) and the ingenious plotting of Ingolfsson, who keeps you turning the pages, (and searching the locales on the map of Iceland). Ingolfsson's output translated into English seems to be less than that of other Icelandic crime novelists, but he is one of the best. I highly recommend it for all lovers of tightly-plotted and locale-rich Scandinavian mysteries. You might also want to try his "The Flatey Enigma."

Mostly I'm hooked on Iceland as a backdrop for any literature--the Icelandic Legends, Njal's Saga, Place in the Heart, and then a mass of mysteries of which Daybreak is one of the best. There seems always to be an echo of a grim mythology lurking beneath the surface. The killer's indifference to death in Daybreak and his nature to kill men seem entirely plausible particularly for anyone acquainted with Icelandic lore. British or American writers could not get away with such obscure motive. Good old detective work clears up some crime and establishes the innocence of persons of interest, but it isn't sufficient when it comes to motives buried in cultural mythology. You will love Birkir Hindriksson, the hunter of Gander.

This is a very enjoyable police "procedural". The characters are interesting and the setting -- Iceland -- is fairly exotic. There is not a lot of suspense and little opportunity for the reader to "guess" the murderer; but, of course, that is the general nature of mysteries showcasing police work: new facts are always turning up.Several years ago my wife and I spent a week in Iceland. We thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and the people, and this novel brought back strong memories of words and names and places. There is a flurry of excitement at the end, which was well thought out, and perhaps could have been extended a bit more.I recommend the book if you like this kind of mystery, and especially if you have an interest in Iceland.

There is no doubt that “August: Osage County” is a great American play. Reading it one instantly gets the same feeling you get from the best O’Neil and Williams dramas. And like those plays, it is saturated with anger and bitterness and love, and all those complex emotions that make us human.Tracy Letts has written the text in a very simple direct style that flows easily, and the structure of the piece fills out nicely. It opens with a prologue that is worth going back and rereading after getting about halfway through, just to see what new resonance it has now that the reader has more information.Written in three acts, the same structure that many great American plays seem to share, the first act pulls you in with an interesting ensemble and plotlines that hint at more under the surface. The second act features a family dinner for the ages and violently and relentlessly will propel the reader to its conclusion. The third act contains more scenes, seems to have a quicker pace, and really punches the reader in the gut with many moments that come up in quick succession. In the hands of a talented director and cast this play would be a gripping night in the theatre.A key moment that stood out to me was Act 3:2, when the character of Barbara realizes that she will never really know why her marriage ended. That moment of acknowledging that she will never get the answers she deserves is recognizable, and painful, to anyone who has suffered through a breakup where the communication was less than should be desired. And really, that lack of honest communication is what the play is about in general. Our inability to be honest with others, and ourselves, is a profound recognition that you see in yourself as you read this play. Which brings me to the ending of the piece, a dark warning that to live your life without honesty and kindness will catch up to you at some point.“August: Osage County” is a play that will be performed and read for generations, and it deserves to be because it is about important human truths, and if we don’t read and go to the theatre every once in a while to have those things pointed out to us…then why are we doing it?

I purposely chose the play form of Tracy Letts' 'August: Osage County' since there is a screenplay version coming out as a tie in with the movie.Reading a play without a great deal of content is so refreshing.'August:Osage County' is so good,so dysfunctionally twisted, that no one gets away unscathed. A masterpiece. Mr. Lett's won a Pulitzer Prize for this jewel and deservedly so.The story is set in Oklahoma,in the home of Beverly and Violet Weston. They are children of the 60's,born into poor families. The Weston's worked hard in youth and for their toils have all the trappings of a good life. But it is not enough. The past's secrets haunt them and have taken too great a toll; Beverly drinks, while Violet is addicted to prescription drugs-again.Then Beverly Weston comes up missing. Their three daughters gather to support Violet and each other while they wait for news. This is when the sadness, madness and secrets of every member comes pouring out.At times funny, charming and shocking,'August:Osage County'receives the highest of fives from me.I just know I will be reading it again.Aloud.

Tracy Letts's masterpiece won the 2008 Tony for best play and the 2008 Pulitzer as well. That's an accomplished double dip that has only been shared by 19 other plays in 90+ years.TS Eliot's "The Hollow Men" is a symbolic poem whose themes run throughout the play, and the last verses of the play are also the last verses of the poem: "This is the way the world ends, this is the way the world ends...."The play is set in Oklahoma in 2007. It begins in August and ends around December. It opens in the living room of a country house 60 miles outside of Tulsa. We find Beverly Winston drinking and musing about life by quoting those he likes: Eliot: "Life is long" and Berryman: "The world is gradually becoming a place where I do not care to be anymore." He sums up his situation shortly: "My wife takes pills and I drink." He interviews Johnna, a 20ish Native American, to work as a caretaker -- especially to look after his wife Violet, a cancer survivor and a prescription pill addict. The prologue ends and that is the last we see of Beverly.Beverly's disappearance causes all three children, his sister-in-law's family and a few assorted others, to descend upon the family home. We watch brutal arguments with stunningly vicious language -- and the meanest viper of all is Violet Weston, who is one of the most difficult mother figures to ever grace the stage. All three daughters have been unlucky in love -- never finding it, picking the wrong man or dealing with the difficulties of a struggling marriage in the face of aging and childrearing. All of these themes are portrayed in dramatic detail.Throughout the action, Letts discusses 21st century education, work, relationships, family, sex, drugs and laws through a variety of the characters. It's an instant classic and something that I'll teach my students if I ever get a drama class.

This is an amazing story of the courage and faith of a thirteen year old girl living through horrific times. In the first part Nonna talks how she enjoyed her family and what it was like being a kid back then. Her family had many grain mills and was pretty well off...until the war hit and the government took over every single one of their mills. The government allowed them the big family house which they stayed in when the government strongly suggested they evacuate. They stayed to protect what little they had left. Nonna's grandmother hoped that the house would be a meeting place for their scattered family after the war. This book is written through Nonna's tender eyes and how she made sense of things at thirteen. After their Christmas celebration, the war started and rumors spread. No one was sure how close the enemy was. Nonna writes in her diary, "I was confused, angry and sad about what the Germans had done. Also, I was trying to figure out what the Jews had done to be treated this way. There was no reason that I could think of." She soon found out that no one was safe from the Germans.Because Nonna's family refused to evacuate, they would be treated as traitors and possibly killed. So, Nonna writes, "...when the Germans offered us transportation to Germany, we had no choice but to take them up on their offer. The Germans needed some laborers in their factories. We heard later that those who stayed behind and did not leave Konstantinowka were thrown on trains and sent to Siberia or killed."An adult Nonna writes this, "I believe forgiveness is important. It is to forgive, as God teaches us, but never forget--rather, to apply the truth to our lives in such a way that we do not repeat our sins over and over again."This is one powerful story told through innocent eyes, trying to make sense of the world around her. It's a miracle she has survived to tell this courageous eye witness account. You won't want to miss this one.Nora St. LaurentACFW Book Club Coordinator

This is a simply awesome read about how a Russian Immigrant survive the Stalin and Hitler regime --- a tale she held in her heart and didn’t even tell any of her family after she arrived to America and married her husband, of 53 years ---- and, managed to live a most wonderful life carrying the happy memories she had of her dead family with her. History repeats itself unless the stories are told – and this story is a remarkable telling of a truth people need to face! It brings history to life and throws it in your face!

I hope and pray that Nona found her peace and finally reunited with her lost family. Please read and share this story. And to the German government: shame on you. After 50 years delay, you still sent Nona a check for the same amount as it was intended to be issued immediately after the war. Your ancestors destroyed her entire family, killed and burned her loved ones, took her life away and still you did not have the decency to at least adjust the check amount for the inflation. Instead of giving her that and additional money as a sign of apology for everything you have caused to Nona, you shamelessly sent her your miserable check 5 decades later. You are no different than your Nazi bloodlines.

This is a very tragic yet beautiful story. Nonna recalls happy times in her childhood before everything changed for her. It was heartwarming to read about the times she shared with her family, times she greatly treasure throughout her life. It was heartbreaking to then read of all the horrors her and her family faced during World War II. Her story is interesting because she wasn’t in a concentration camp, but rather was a slave laborer - still essentially improsoned, still witnessing truly awful things, but a bit of a different aspect that was interesting. She also tells of how she rebuilt her life after all the struggle. This was heartbreaking and also inspiring. Truly wonderful book.

This was a story of the life a young girl who saw it all fall apart as the Communist Russian government changed her early life of plenty to one of hardship. Many of her family members lost their lives as the Germans under Adolf Hitler invaded Russia and all were affected, not only the Jews. Nonna kept diaries and journaled about all these events through her growing years. After American Soldiers ended WWI, she had no family left, so pursued the dream of her father and moved to America. She met her future husband shortly after arriving, and she kept everything that happened during her early life deep inside. After about forty years, she finally decided to share her early life and the story of the Holocaust with her beloved husband. She opened her journals and dictated to him in English the events she had recorded, and he typed her words. They were married for fifty-three years when she died, and upon her death her family decided to publish this story.I was horrified at her details. The Holocaust was real. The book tells the story in chronological order, but there are a few spots that seemed repetitious, but considering the personal information shared, I believe Nonna Bannister did an excellent job of transcribing it from the eight languages she had written it in.The book gives many details; some of it might not be suitable for young children, but it should be read by all.

I chose this book because I love true history! I felt like I was with Nonna throughout this entire book! At times she brought me back to my own childhood in New England! When we visited with my own mothers farm after a good snowfall! My uncles would hitch some horses to the family sleigh , we would all bundle up get big blankets & ride all around the little town & fields of Dracut, Mass! I used to love those nights, with my Mom's family! Nonna brought me right back to my favorite childhood memories!
